Job Description:

The Small Animal Hospital is recruiting a veterinary technician for the Primary Care & Dentistry service. We are seeking a technician who is eager to deliver extraordinary care to their patients. Technicians assist in providing treatments to patients for general care appointments and for dental procedures, along with providing demonstration and instruction to veterinary students. An individual in this position must possess excellent communication skills and be proactive in determining the needs of the hospital. A successful applicant should enjoy learning new things and can quickly adapt to a changing environment. They need to possess a good base knowledge of veterinary medicine and express a positive attitude in their daily work. The individual must be able to communicate effectively, demonstrate critical thinking and professionalism.

Example of Veterinary Technician Duties and Responsibilities include but not limited to:

o Assist in providing clinical support to the primary care and dentistry service
o Perform general nursing care such as venipuncture, catheter placement, patient restraint, treatments, medication administration, and sample collection
o Assist with patient evaluations or rechecks by assisting in patient restraint, obtaining and submitting samples, scheduling with other services for diagnostic or consultation purposes, and providing treatment or
medications
o Assist with cytology, skin scrapes, fecal flotation, PCV/TP/AZO, and SNAP heartworm and FELV/FIV tests
o Maintain microscope, IDEXX SNAP test/analyzer, stains, and supplies for laboratory equipment. Assist in obtaining and submitting samples to the appropriate lab.
o Know and assist others with current vaccine protocols and various preventatives and the proper use for both dogs and cats
o Perform basic anesthesia and sedation procedures including intubation, patient monitoring, and recovery ensuring accurate anesthesia records
o Assist with dentistry, taking and developing dental radiographs, and post-op nursing care of dentistry patients
o Know dental instruments needed for various procedures
o Able to take dental radiographs that are of diagnostic quality
o Know dental formula for both dogs and cat and proper charting
o Know how to properly perform a dental prophy
o Maintain equipment, inventory and supplies by checking inventory levels, evaluating equipment, and anticipating needs for upcoming procedures
o Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventative maintenance requirements, following manufacturer’s instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, calling for repairs, maintaining equipment
inventories, evaluating new equipment and techniques

The service receives Monday – Friday. May require working earlier than 7:30am or later than 5:00pm

This is a full-time, benefited position and is considered essential personnel. A post-offer education verification, background check, and health assessment are required.

Expected Salary:

Non-credentialed Veterinary Technician: $18-$22/hr

Credentialed Veterinary Technician: $20-$25/hr

Minimum Requirements:

Veterinary Technician I: High school diploma or equivalent and one year of relevant experience
Veterinary Technician II: Credentialed veterinary technician

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduate from an accredited American Veterinary Medical Association program for veterinary technology OR
Credentialed veterinary technician
