As a CO+I Principal Critical Environment Program Manager you will perform a key role in delivering and managing the critical environment infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft’s online services including Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform. As part of the America’s Datacenter Operations team, the Principal Critical Environment Program Manager will provide leadership and direction driving the continuous development and improvement of our Critical Environment Battery & Maintenance strategy program in support of our growing portfolio across all lifecycles. In this role you will work collaboratively with all CO+I stakeholders to support, enable, and influence the vision and action necessary for the organization’s overall availability success.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent AND 7 + years experience in Program and Project Management in large complex, cross-functional technology organizations (e.g., IT services, manufacturing, warehouse, retail, military, or managing physical operations in an IT and/or critical environment infrastructure).
- 3+ years technical engineering experience related to Critical Environments Battery Maintenance & Program Governance.
Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Battery Monitoring Applications and Software in one or more of the following areas: Redundant Uninterruptible Power Supply systems, Uninterruptible Power Supply battery strings, Electrical Equipment Control Power Battery Strings, Battery Monitoring Systems, Charging methods, Features & Overall Health.
- Experience with planning and implementation of Critical Environment Battery Maintenance and End of Life strategies.
- Knowledge of construction techniques, terminology, and documentation (Ability to interpret blueprints, electrical one-lines, construction drawings etc.).
- Previous experience in structured process improvement and efficiency gains (e.g., Six Sigma, Kaizen, etc.).
- Practical experience with building management systems and automation, controls & frameworks.
- Experience developing and maintaining Technical and Program level content across various layers in an organization.
Data Center Operations Management IC6 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,800 – $267,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,000 – $294,000 per year.

Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership, guidance, expert-level clarity and direction with oversight for projects, programs, and initiatives across the Critical Environment discipline of Datacenter Field Operations related to our Battery Program & Associated Systems: Monitoring, Maintenance, Program Adherence, and Execution.
- Regional ownership with cross-region and global influence of datacenter level application of Critical Environments Policy and Standards to drive consistency, performance, and best practice adoption across the portfolio while influencing change related to backup power systems and associated infrastructure.
- Own and drive resolution of any gaps in associated programs across the portfolio.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for field teams to submit Critical Environment Program feedback, including process improvements, updates to standards documentation, tooling improvements with key focus on Battery Maintenance, Strategy and Associated Programs.
- Provide governance, leadership, oversight, and management of regional level programs and initiatives.
- Ensure project and program stakeholder and sponsor awareness.
- Lead, coach, and mentor Datacenter Critical Environment Management teams conducting Root Cause Analysis (RCA) on incidents and outages to ensure presentation to leadership is ready, all aspects are accounted for, and lessons learned propagated to other sites.
- Provide additional on-site support to Critical Environment personnel as needed during incidents, critical work periods, etc.
- Monitor the campus/metro risk profile, advise on action plans to reduce overall level of risk, and report/trend progress.
- Ensure sites follow Microsoft policies, standards, Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs), and guidelines.
- Consult on Critical Environment related policies, standards, guidelines, and procedures to ensure they are aligned with current industry best practices, requirements, and learnings across Datacenter Operations.
