Principal Data Science Manager (Data Democratization)

The IDEAs (Insights, Data Engineering and Analytics) team provides the data platform for the Experiences +Devices Organziation and fuels growth for M365, Windows and SCIM. We turn data and insights into services and products that drive customer growth, product engagement, and improve product quality. We power product experiences and customer outreach initiatives through predictive modeling, machine learning models and recommenders that nurture the customer throughout their lifecycle from pre-acquisition to retention.

The E+D Insights, Data Engineering and Analytics (IDEAS) Team is looking for a Principal Data Science Manager (Data Democratization) to take on the charter of democratizing data to make useful across our 40,000 person engineering team.

This work includes:

  • Providing a holistic strategy for data democratization scenarios including measures of success
  • Create a repeatable framework that can be employed at scale within our team
  • Create a holistic plan to onboard teams within (and outside of) the Experience + Devices division
  • Working with a wide array of audiences (Engineering, Marketing, Finance, Sales) and working in an effective manner

Qualifications:
Minimum/Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 12+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
    • OR Master’s Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 10+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
    • OR Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 8+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years people-management experience
  • 4+ years experience with product telemetry and creating useful metrics
  • 8+ years experience interpreting data rational models

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced working knowledge of large data manipulation and data mining
  • Exceptional problem solving, technical and data analysis skills
  • Demonstrated business, analytical and organizational skills, communication skills and ability to adapt communication style for presentations and/or based on audience and situation.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver on ambiguous projects with incomplete or dirty data
  • Demonstrated Ability to work in a cross-team environment that promotes collaboration

Data Science M6 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $158,500 – $276,600 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $202,800 – $304,200 per year.

Responsibilities:

  • Define business-strategy goals and solution-strategy goals related to our data science democratization plan including success measures
  • Uses feedback to provide input to Product Engineering on the development and implementation of new tools, technologies, and/or processes to continuously improve product availability, reliability, efficiency, and/or performance across the business.
  • Develops partnerships with engineering teams to relay customer feedback to improve products.
  • Create a plan to drive adoption of democratized data at scale across Experience + Devices (and beyond)
  • Partner with specific functions / domains including our engineering team
  • Work with these stakeholders to define clear signals of success, which translate into simple, easily understood metrics
  • Develop roadmap of data-based capabilities and tools to meet vision of scenarios
