Principal Electrical Engineer , Datacenter Engineering – Power Generation Solutions

Amazon Web Services is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer to lead the technical evaluation and deployment of utility scale generation plants, including distributed energy technologies such as Solar, Wind, Battery Energy Storage and Fuel Cells. This role will require extensive knowledge of design, construction and operation of utility scale power plants. These utility scale power plants may include but not limited to renewable energy plants, gas powered plants and nuclear plants. Proficiency in large scale power generation, grid interconnection and transmission is required.

We are looking for utility scale power engineers with electrical design and operation/ maintenance experience in solar, wind, gas, and nuclear. The candidate should be highly skilled in the design and operation of the utility scale power plants, understand the critical equipment needs for a utility scale plant (50 MW and higher) and utility grid interconnection requirements and regulations as a private power developer, and understand the constructability of varying designs.

You will work closely with our customers in AWS Energy to understand the technical needs and business goals, leveraging your experience with power generation (combustion and renewable) design and the knowledge of various teams to architect the solutions that we will deploy at scale. To deliver your power generation and energy storage products; you will work with an interdisciplinary team of electrical, mechanical, reliability, civil, structural engineers, and partners in legal, environmental, sustainability and other cross functions to lead our design strategy and tactical deliverables to bring these solutions to life. After launch you will oversee lessons learned for continuous improvement. You will serve as a thought and technical leader for the team to solve large scale design and operational issues.

As we grow we are structuring our team to own more of our plant design and distributed energy assets in house. In this role, you will work with the Principals and the Senior Global Electrical Engineers to drive the global standardization of the designs. You will be overseeing the process and responsible for taking the designs from concept/schematic development through permit & construction documents. You will participate in the research and development of new technologies and designs applicable to our products or services. You will be also responsible for writing technical documentation for such projects. You must be capable of defining critical equipment specifications and scoping/ reviewing/ approving equipment submittals. You will directly support construction activities and be a part of the process from site selection review through commissioning and turnover. You will be the subject matter expert in the power plant design and operability, renewable integration, and electrical engineering field.

Amazon has a global presence; therefore 30% domestic and international travel will be necessary. An understanding of international electrical design requirements and standards is preferable.

Key job responsibilities

  • Be a leader within the global group as well as within internal and external teams that support our data centers.
  • Capture requirements and turn aspirational company or customer goals into well-defined, achievable and testable specifications and solutions.
  • Design and construction of utility scale generation plants, energy storage systems, and associated substations.
  • Development of design proposals which meet or exceed our quality requirements and fall within our budgetary requirements.
  • Collaborate and design with teams or individuals from other disciplines, cultures and countries to create a construction document set.
  • Participate in site selection reviews.
  • Work with local utilities and grid operators to understand and define the interconnection requirements.
  • Work with internal teams to understand user/ customer requirements.
  • Work with regional vendors and manufacturers to specify the appropriate electrical equipment.
  • Work with local authorities having jurisdiction to ensure compliance with IEEE/ANSI, UL, IEC, EU requirements and building codes.
  • Review and approval of equipment submittals including test and commissioning requirements.
  • Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests prior to, and during research and development projects.
  • Work with commissioning teams to prepare scripts, and properly test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively at the appropriate level of detail with people from a wide range of technical abilities and backgrounds.
  • Produce clear and concise documentation such as detailed design specifications, functional test scripts, reports and version release notes.
  • Understand and safeguard implementation of the Global Electrical Basis of Design (BoD) with constant auditing.
  • Travel to sites for site review and work with onsite field engineers, as well as provide engineering evaluations and electrical systems audits as needed.
  • Ability to work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical or nuclear engineering.
  • 10+ years of experience with design and operation of utility scale power plants in a utility, or project development company.
  • Understanding of the US ANSI, UL, NERC, FERC, NESC and European EN & IEC standards.
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
  • Knowledge of Carbon Neutrality and Global Net-Zero Carbon Objectives
  • Knowledge of Greenhouse Gas and Global Air Quality Emissions Reduction techniques including NOx, SOx, PM, CH4, CO2, and SF6 as it applies to electrical power generation.
  • Expertise in the design and construction of Gas Turbine Generation Plants and Air and Gas Insulated Substations.
  • Technical expertise in relay protection schemes, HV & MV circuit breakers, power and distribution transformers, electrical switchgear, grounding and earthing schemes.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience mentoring/ training the engineering community on complex technical issues.
  • Possess leadership and problem-solving skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree or higher in electrical engineering.
  • 15+ years of relevant design experience deploying utility scale power plants across the United States.
  • Direct experience with the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of generation plants, nuclear plants, energy storage assets, and substations.
  • Understanding of mechanical equipment and system design.
  • Experience with fast track design/build projects and or multiple significant upgrade projects.
  • Experience with Hyperscale Distributed Energy Projects such as Battery Energy Storage (BESS), Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES), Fuel Cells, Solar, and Wind.
  • Experience with designing, deploying, operating utility scale power plants and interconnections.
  • Possess excellent communication skills, attention to detail, maintain high quality standards.
  • Capable of working in a highly fast-paced, ambiguous environment, managing conflicting priorities and deliverables.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $130,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $252,900/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
