As a Principal Infrastructure Technical Business Developer within the Backbone Network Development team you are responsible for managing the cost, supply and strategic development of Amazon’s physical network infrastructure in your specific geographic region. You will be experienced in network development (network expansion and network investment programs), financial investment analysis and business cases, legal/contracting for telecoms services and have regulatory awareness. Additionally you will have knowledge of optical transport technologies, backbone network engineering design principles, and you will have expert knowledge of network infrastructure providers in your region. This role requires extensive collaboration, driving strategic market facing initiatives, creating long term supply plans to meet our demand, and delivering year on year cost savings for the backbone corridors you own. You will actively drive backbone infrastructure solutions within your region, working with Backbone Network Planners, suppliers, technology partners, as well as Amazon networking teams to meet our customers’ demands.
Key job responsibilities
– Work with suppliers to verify and/or gain supply in response to supplied forecast demand and network topology plans.
– Collaboratively develop network infrastructure execution plans in partnership with Backbone Network Planners that involve leased wavelengths (capacity), dark fibre and submarine cable capacity/builds.
– Develop strategic regional backbone supply plans for approval by internal customers and stakeholders, with a focus on short, medium and long term needs (e.g. leased capacity, fiber pairs, and new cable builds).
– Work with Amazon Legal and Public Policy teams to identify Amazon’s compliance to local telecoms regulations and drive opportunities to improve our operating models (e.g. obtaining a telecoms license or gaining exceptions to own and operate dark fiber where standard regulation doesn’t allow).
– In coordination/collaboration with Planning, Partner with Edge and New Region Planning teams to plan, develop and execute new country expansion projects.
– Own all elements of supplier management including but not limited to pricing, billing, and service level availability compliance.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor’s Degree in an IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Candidates should have a minimum of 10-years telecommunications industry experience in a similar environment.
Candidates must have direct commercial and technical experience working in a company owning or operating long haul dark fiber networks and DWDM systems.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate where they have influenced the design, development, contracting, implementation, and operation of long haul backbone networks.
Extensive knowledge of IP peering ecosystems, fiber optic networks, submarine cables and the interconnection of these networks in order to obtain the highest availability for delivering online services globally.
Ability to create complex financial models to understand business impacts of various network solutions is required.
Demonstrated ability to formulate data driven decisions that lead to results.
Sound business judgment, proven ability to influence others, and strong analytical thinking skills are critical to success in this position.
Willing to travel.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working at a large network operator, OTT or Internet Service Provider.
Demonstrated ability to anticipate customer requirements and build strategic plans.
Experience interacting with senior executives and other management within your own company and externally; and working across commercial, technical, domestic, and international arms of an organization
In-depth knowledge of the latest optical communications developments.
In-depth knowledge of and experience with major internet routing protocols; specifically BGP, OSPF, MPLS, RSVP and ISIS.
Ability to speak multiple languages.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $140,800/year in our lowest geographic market up to $261,900/year in our highest geographic market.
