This position is for a Prinicpal Networking Engineer in the Azure Hardware Architecture organization. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and evaluation of datacenter networking technologies to deliver leading-edge capabilities for Azure’s global customers, focusing on advanced congestion control, scalability, low latency, and high throughput. The work includes simulating architectural design and collaborating closely with other architects focused on future datacenter designs.
We are looking for a Principal Networking Engineer to work directly with our product group and partner teams. You will work closely with other networking teams (Azure Networking and Core Operating Systems), and the hardware and other software teams building the accelerator. Key components for success in this role will be the ability to learn and adopt relevant new technologies, tools, methods and processes from Microsoft, industry, and the research community, while developing the team’s ability to consume these technologies.
As part of the Azure Hardware Architecture team, you would join a cross-disciplinary team of highly capable and motivated people in the Azure Hardware Systems Group. You will be expected to collaborate across multiple workstreams and roles like architects, program management leads and engineering leads across the Azure Hardware Systems Group. Excellent communication and presentation skills are important to be able to work with these partners and our customers.
Responsibilities:
As a Principal Networking Engineer you will be responsible for the following:
- Collaborate with hardware teams to design novel transport systems targeting the 3-5-year timeframe, to address infrastructure efficiency goals
- Software modelling of network architecture and other building blocks to realistically simulate end-to-end performance at scale
- Collaborate with various partner teams in Microsoft (Azure cloud services, Operating Systems (OS)/Hyper-V software, Hardware design, etc.), to prototype and build suitable transport solutions and ensure end-to-end software-hardware solutions
- Software development in C++ and Python
- Design and code review of peer work
Qualifications:
Required/Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C++, Python
- OR equivalent experience.

These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C++, Python
- OR Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C++, Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- Desirable expertise in, experience with or passionate about:
- Building scalable transports for data center networks.
- Computer networking, with thorough understanding of system software (Operating System, Drivers, Firmware) and its interaction with the hardware platform
- Leading and driving complex projects
- Growth mindset/curiosity for learning and deploying new technologies

Software Engineering IC5 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 – $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 – $282,200 per year.
