The Microsoft Applied Sciences Group incubates disruptive technologies for Microsoft’s next-gen hardware products and is working on several exciting projects that will shape how computers and other devices perceive the user and the user’s environment. Operating as a startup within the company, this team works closely with several research and product teams to bring compelling new experiences to the market. A lot of these experiences will be powered by speech and computer vision – and as part of this team, you will have the unique opportunity to work on almost every aspect of a shipping audio and vision system: camera optics, sensors, data pipeline and of course, developing and implementing the algorithms that make magic happen!
The Applied Sciences Group is growing, and we have an exciting opportunity for a talented Principal Research Software Engineer t o drive and lead development of algorithms and efficient implementations for specific and general-purpose silicon on next-generation devices and operating systems. This is a hands-on tech lead role that will have collaboration opportunities throughout the organization. The Principal Research Software Engineer will be building new stuff that really works, and delivering it to millions of users worldwide.
Qualifications:
Required/Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- At least 1 year of industry experience with low level programming using C/C++
- At least 1 year of industry experience with image/audio processing or other technical/scientific software products relying on numerical and algorithmic performance.
Additional or Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of experience with low level programming using C/C++
- 3+ years of industry experience with image/audio processing or other technical/scientific software products relying on numerical and algorithmic performance.
- Experience with SIMD (NEON, SVE, SSE, AVX, HVX), shaders or ASM programming
- Experience with multi-threading
- Some experience with machine learning
- Passionate about incubating new ideas, solving problems, prototyping and productizing working systems
- Proven collaborator, attentive to details, keen to learn, thriving on ambiguity
- Practical experience working in a highly performant team in an academic or industrial research environment
Software Engineering IC5 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 – $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 – $282,200 per year.
