Pro Bono Coordinator

BayLegal seeks an individual who is committed to social justice and interested in using their skills to support BayLegal’s Pro Bono Department. BayLegal’s Pro Bono program engages a full range of volunteers from law firm attorneys and corporate in-house counsel to law school and high school volunteers and civic-minded individuals with no prior legal background. The coordinator supports the administration of all day-to-day department activities and long-term goals for expanding access to civil legal services. The position is based in BayLegal’s Central Support office in Oakland, California, and reports to the Pro Bono Director.

As Pro Bono Coordinator, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn the diverse legal needs of underserved and vulnerable communities across seven Bay Area Counties (Napa, Marin, Contra Costa, Alameda, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara).
  • Assist with the administration of all day-to-day department activities, including responding to email volunteer inquiries, coordinating with BayLegal’s regional offices and units regarding internal volunteer needs, updating and processing volunteer onboarding forms, and coordinating student and non-attorney volunteer recruitment and retention efforts.
  • Help with the coordination of trainings and legal clinics (see BayLegal website for a description of full range of legal matters and clinics) including preparing clinic materials, overseeing logistics, and coordinating with volunteers and local staff in preparation and on-site as needed.
  • Manage database of pro bono program records, data reporting and analysis.
  • Maintain and update pro bono written recruitment and training materials.
  • Engage in other tasks and projects that further BayLegal’s mission and operations as a non-profit.

Requirements/Qualifications/ About the Successful Candidate:

  • Humility in working with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and/or limited English proficiency.
  • BA/BS educational degree.
  • Bilingual ability in Spanish preferred.
  • Experience with data entry, database management and reporting (LCRM Salesforce, Microsoft Excel).
  • Experience with social media platforms for volunteer engagement and recruitment a plus.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, with ability to be detail oriented.
  • Experience maintaining and protecting confidential and privileged information.
  • Interest working collaboratively with a dynamic team.
  • Experience organizing time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Sense of humor, curious and self-directed.

HYBRID WORK OPTION: BayLegal is committed to the health and safety of our staff, clients, and community. BayLegal has health and safety protocols to minimize risk of exposure. BayLegal has an evolving plan to continue to safely increase in-person services and activities in our offices and community-based advocacy sites. Currently, most BayLegal employees work a hybrid model including on-site and in-person work and working from home on a part-time basis. Employees are expected to reside in California and at a distance allowing them to commute to their physical BayLegal base location, and to other service delivery locations as needed, during the standard work week.

Compensationand Benefits: We offer a diverse, family friendly environment, and compensation based on competitive public interest salaries along with a generous benefits package. The estimated annual salary range is $55,000 – $65,000 (placement in range determined primarily by years of related experience). BayLegal’s benefits package includes 100% employer covered medical, dental, and life insurance for employees and up to 60% for dependents; BayLegal student debt reimbursement program; long term disability insurance; employee assistance program; stipends for bilingual employees whose language skills are used in the provision of work tasks; dependent childcare employer contribution program; employer paid CA Bar license and/or social work license fees; and 401k retirement plan with BayLegal contribution following first year. BayLegal’s paid leave policy includes sick leave; parental leave; 15 holidays each year; 3 floating holidays each year (days chosen by employee); and vacation (starting at 13 days and increasing with additional years of employment).
