Product Designer – Packaging

The Packaging and Content organization (PAC) at Microsoft is looking for an exceptional Product Designer with experience in structural and graphic package design to join our award-wining team.

Great design doesn’t happen by accident. It takes a dedicated, highly skilled team that is deeply involved from initial concept to production. Working with the PAC Design Team, you will be supporting the generation, development and execution of packaging design solutions for Microsoft hardware (and to a limited degree software) products.

The Packaging and Content Team drives for the most sustainable, accessible packaging experiences on the planet, and works holistically across partners including Brand, Product Marketing, Industrial Design and Sourcing, among many others.

Qualifications:
Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field
    • OR equivalent experience (e.g., experience using design thinking to solve problems).

Other Requirements:

  • A portfolio is required with submission of your application

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 2+ years related work experience working in product or service design
    • OR Master’s Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, or related field AND 1+ year(s) relevant internship/work experience working in product or service design
  • Demonstrated success in driving conceptual ideas from ideation to iteration and presentation.
  • Customer-focused design process background with proven ability to deliver designs that align with brand and product visions, and can push our business in new, innovative directions
  • Deep interest and awareness of global design, packaging, industry, retail, consumer trends and the ability to leverage such insights
  • Exoerience with one or more 3D tools (SolidWorks, etc.), advanced surfacing capabilities and high-volume molding techniques
  • Visual and communication skills through sketching, illustration, and 3D form creation.
  • Experience in Illustrator, Photoshop, Powerpoint, Keyshot, etc.
  • Knowledge in materials and manufacturing processes common to the consumer packaging industry
  • Versatility with design and rapid prototyping tools and methods
  • Experience with 2D die line development
  • Organizational skills to managing multiple projects at once.
  • Willingness to learn, motivate and inspire others

Product Design IC2 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $76,400 – $151,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $100,300 – $165,400 per year.

Responsibilities:

  • Work within an internal Design Team to deliver world class design solutions for major global product lines such as Surface, Xbox, Mixed Reality, Commercial channel customers, Windows and Office.
  • Ideate, create and socialize packaging design solutions in partnership with stakeholders and PAC Design and development teammates.
  • Leverage knowledge, passion, and practical experience in structural packaging design, graphics, sketching, 3D form development, prototyping, and skillful presentation abilities.
  • Map and design seamless “Out of Box” product experiences and intuitive user moments across a variety of products via physical and graphic elements
  • Develop and deliver rich experience-led design solutions in collaboration with other designers, packaging engineers, UX researchers and cross-functional stakeholders
  • Directly impact Microsoft’s consumer brands and products and other connected consumer products
