Gritstone bio is a public, next-generation personalized cancer and infectious immunotherapy company. Gritstone brings together distinguished scientific founders, an experienced and diverse management team, a seasoned and successful board of directors and deep financial backing to tackle fundamental challenges at the intersection of cancer genomics, immunology, and immunotherapy design. The company’s goal is to identify and deploy neoantigens for novel treatments of cancer and infectious diseases. In addition to neoantigen therapy development, Gritstone is leveraging its unique antigen discovery platform to define targets for shared antigen immunotherapies, which would provide an opportunity to treat even more patients.

Position Summary

Gritstone Bio is seeking a Bioinformatics Co-op to help perform analysis of proprietary and public single-cell and bulk genomic datasets to find actionable biological insights. This position is a 6-month paid Co-op on Gritstone’s Bioinformatics and Data Science team, beginning in July 2023.

Responsibilities

  • Develop research-grade algorithms for reproducible bioinformatics processes
  • Analyze internal and external single cell genomics datasets to generate and test hypotheses about biological mechanisms of action
  • Translate data into biological insights, and present and discuss results in project team meetings

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Currently enrolled in MS or PhD programs majoring in computer science, biology, bioinformatics or computational biology
  • Previous research experience involving single-cell sequencing
  • Experience with single-cell informatics software and pipelines (Seurat, Scanpy, etc.)
  • Experience with single-cell immune profiling (T cell repertoire) analysis
  • Experience working with large datasets, especially single-cell sequencing-based data
  • Programming experience with Python or R, including collaboratively writing and documenting code
  • Proficiency in version control, using Git
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of cancer biology as it relates to immunotherapy development and single-cell sequencing
  • Understanding of different single cell platforms (10x, Smart-seq, etc.)
  • Familiarity with statistical packages and tools, dimensionality reduction, clustering, and single cell annotation.
  • Able to function independently, picking up new skills and investigating scientific literature as necessary
  • Experience with next-generation sequencing data analysis using workflow handlers such as Nextflow, Make, or CWL
  • Experience working in the cloud or on a high-performance computing cluster

Gritstone bio anticipates that the hourly rate for the Bioinformatics Co-Op position could range between $30.00/hour – $35.00/hour. Pay rates will depend, in part, on the successful candidate’s credentials for the role, including education, qualifications, and type as well as length of experience. Any offered salary is also based on internal equity, internal position salary ranges, and market data. Gritstone is a multistate employer and the salary offered will be market competitive. At Gritstone, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
