DESCRIPTION
Mendocino-Lake Community College District is currently accepting applications for a Professional Expert, Short-Term, Non-Continuing Gallery Director.
This is a temporary, non-continuing position. This position will remain open until filled.

Under the direction of the appropriate Dean or designee the gallery director is responsible for the day-to-day operations and management of the Mendocino College Art Gallery

SALARY AND BENEFITS
This is a Professional Expert, temporary, hourly position, 20 hours per week, during the academic year (August – May) $40.00 per hour, hours may vary depending on program need; Ed Code 88003 authorizes a governing board to hire STNC employees for less than 75% of a school year, up to 180 days.
Scheduled hours and days will vary based on program needs.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The successful candidate will support institutional and student success by executing the following duties:
General Duties:
- Planning and production of 4-6 Exhibitions per academic year.
- In coordination with Art Department faculty and the Gallery Committee, develop an annual schedule of exhibitions that support course and student learning outcomes.
- Help ensure that curatorial decisions contribute to fulfillment of the gallery’s mission (art/art-gallery) and the colleges’ role as a cultural anchor of the region.
- Help ensure that consideration is given to a comprehensive mix of materials, methods, techniques, and styles used in works of art and reflect the diversity of the student body and community.
- Create and issue calls for work. Disseminate these calls through all appropriate media
- Identify all physical, personnel, and other support needs of exhibitions and events well in advance.
- Design of exhibition space, including hanging, signage, labels, and lighting of exhibits and events.
- Develop, in coordination with artists and faculty, informational and educational materials to supplement exhibitions and events.
- Working with STNC gallery assistant, and work study students (if available) receive artworks and install the artworks in the gallery, set lighting, mount labels and signage.
- Working with STNC gallery assistant and work study students (if available), deinstall the artworks in the gallery and return to artists or their representatives.
- In coordination with the marketing department, develop posters, flyers, and cards, and electronic flyers, press releases, web site postings, and social media promotion materials for each exhibition and event. Ensure that physical and digital promotional materials are widely distributed to campus and community audiences.
Outreach, and Faculty Coordination & Fundraising:
- Staff the Art Gallery Committee (chaired by full time art faculty) and assist in recruitment of membership.
- Chair the Foundation Affiliate Gallery Committee, recruit members, fulfill reporting requirements to Foundation, prepare budgets and take the lead on fundraising efforts with the Affiliate (such as establishing a fee structure for submissions and sales, auctions & other events)
- In partnership with FT faculty, act as a liaison between the gallery and the rest of campus, cultivating interdisciplinary exhibits and responding to requests for additional programing for various events.
- Network with other institutions and arrange for loans of artwork.
- Arrange for educational talks by exhibiting artists (when funding allows)
- Organize and provide tours for students and visitors, tailoring tours to the specific needs and interests of the visiting group.
- Coordinates gallery opening and closing receptions.
Supervision:
- Recruit, train, and mentor student/STNC workers to develop their technical skills and customer service practices within gallery facilities.
- Oversee and train student/STNC gallery assistants in the proper and professional manner of unpacking/packing and handling works of art
- Assess student/STNC gallery assistants to ensure Gallery facility policies are being followed and enforced .
- Schedule student/STNC gallery assistant so that gallery is staffed during regular campus hours and for theater, music and dance performances on weekends. Provide back-up staffing of gallery as needed.
Budget, Equipment and Archive Management:
- Oversee the gallery budget. Process purchase orders
- Document and organize inventory of supplies, tools and equipment. Monitor and maintain equipment.
- Maintain organization of gallery office, track all gallery archives and artwork under the ownership of the Gallery,
- Coordinate with business office to ensure that artwork is properly documented and insured for each exhibition and assist in periodic required appraisals of permanent collection.
QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFCATIONS
- Must meet Human Resources guidelines for qualified hiring; including by not limited to a Live Scan background check, completion of TB, and work permit where required.
- Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, geographic, and ethnic backgrounds of students, staff, and faculty.
PRERERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Art, Design, Curatorial, or Museum Studies plus one year of exhibition planning, curation, design and installation experience or AA in same subjects plus 3 years of same experience gallery
- Experience with standard office software and social media platforms.
- Experience working in an educational gallery within an academic setting
- Experience with fundraising and event planning & promotion
- Experience with supervision of students or temporary workers.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
This position requires the use of a personal vehicle while conducting District business. Must possess a valid (Class C) California Driver’s license and an acceptable driving record. Position may be required to travel locally to pick up event related materials. May be required to work occasional evening and weekend hours.

ENIVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Work is primarily performed in an art gallery and office type setting. May work outside occasionally.
