The Work You Will Do:
This Professional Geologist II position performs highly technical, professional work under the direction of the Environmental Administrator for the Waste Cleanup Program’s Federal Programs Section within the Division of Waste Management located in Tallahassee, Florida. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, discipline-specific knowledge, leadership skills, adaptive management knowledge and skills and be highly effective in both the team and autonomous environment.

The Professional Geologist II provides regulatory oversight for environmental restoration work conducted at federal facilities across Florida under state and federal regulations, including RCRA and CERCLA. This position interacts with federal partners, EPA, DEP District Offices, and other sections and divisions across DEP in order to support the progress of sites through environmental investigation and restoration. This position is also instrumental at leading special projects, developing guidance and internal training, and mentoring junior team members.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
This is a highly technical, professional position that is responsible for providing technical and scientific support in the implementation of a statewide program for the assessment and remediation of Department of Defense (DOD) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) contamination sites. The incumbent is required to be registered in the State of Florida as a certified Professional Geologist. The incumbent is also required to maintain a valid Drivers’ License. The duties of the position include the following:
- Serves as Remedial Project Manager (RPM) responsible for contaminated site program management for multiple DOD installations, NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, and for Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS). Employee coordinates reviews and tracks assessment/cleanup operations at assigned facilities. Employee provides written and verbal guidance to assure statewide consistency is incorporated in cleanup of sites. As RPM, employee is empowered with decision-making authority related to work at assigned installations and FUDS.
- Provides sole technical review of assessment and cleanup related documents, and project management review of other documents, generated by the DOD hazardous waste cleanup programs required by IRP, MMRP, CERCLA, RCRA, State law and rules. Ensures and coordinates technical review of FUDS assessment and cleanup related documents, and project management review of other documents, generated by USACE required by CERCLA, State law and rules. Provides and/or ensures and coordinates technical review of assessment and cleanup related documents, and project management review of other documents, generated by the DOD and USACE, for compliance with Chapters 62-780 and 62-777, F.A.C. Provides Professional Geologist certification of comments or approvals of assessment related documents as appropriate.
- Actively participates in partnering with DOD, NASA, USACE, and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) staff, as appropriate, to enhance and improve the achievement of State and Federal requirements, along with DOD, USACE, and EPA goals and objectives. Provides guidance and clarification about State rules and regulations, along with Department policies. As requested, attends meetings, conferences, and/or workshops and delivers presentations as needed.
- Provides oversight and on-scene coordination of DOD, NASA and FUDS field activities as appropriate or as requested.
- Provides mentorship and leads training events for junior staff. Serves as subject matter expert as assigned or requested.
- Performs special duty assignments and attend meetings at the request of supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of geology, hydrogeology, chemistry and Florida’s groundwater.
- Knowledge of site assessment techniques and methods, including monitoring well construction and sampling, especially for hazardous waste sites.
- Knowledge of remedial action techniques and methods, especially for hazardous waste, petroleum and/or munitions sites.
- Knowledge of state and federal regulations for federal facilities.
- Skilled in project management.
- Skilled in effective meeting management and consensus decision making.
- Skilled in Microsoft Office software.
- Ability to evaluate comprehensive technical documents.
- Ability to write effectively, in a well-organized, and understandable manner.
- Ability to communicate orally in a clear and effective manner.
- Ability to maintain a valid Driver’s License.
- Travel.
Minimum Qualifications:
- State of Florida licensed Professional Geologist.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering, environmental science, or one of the physical or natural sciences.
- Must have OSHA Safety Training Certification or the ability to complete training for Certification within 6 months of hire.
- A valid driver’s license.
