Description
If you have a passion for outdoor recreation and enjoy engaging with the public, join Cary’s Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources team as a Program Assistant II to assist with the implementation of outdoor recreation programs, boathouse management, and park support. The position is primarily focused in Bond Park, a 310-acre oasis in the middle of Cary which offers a vast array of outdoor recreation opportunities, including archery, fishing, boating, ropes and outdoor skills. The Program Assistant II will play a critical role in providing instruction, program management, and administrative support for outdoor recreation programs.
This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year.
This position requires a flexible schedule with the ability to work evenings and weekends.
Typical Tasks
Assists with with the administration and execution of outdoor recreation programs, camps, and special events;
Performs administrative work such as participant registration, daily enrollment checks, and developing daily activity plans;
Leads program instruction and assists other outdoor recreation program instructors with program delivery and group management as needed;
Helps with set-up for programs and events;
Performs marketing tasks such as creating brochures, posters, flyers, etc.;
Performs data entry/processing and maintains databases;
Supports camp and track-out staff when appropriate;
May engage in significant telephone contact with the public;
Serves as the manager on duty for boathouse or challenge course when needed;
Performs other job-related tasks as required.

Requires strong organizational and computer skills; general knowledge of computers and related software; general knowledge of standard office practices and procedures; ability to complete assignments accurately and prior to the established deadline; skill in the operation of common office equipment; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to acquire knowledge of Cary policies, procedures, and the services of the department; ability to work independently; ability to interact with the public tactfully and constructively.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Education and Experience
Requires education or experience equivalent to a four-year degree in education, recreation, physical education, or a related field.
Prefers experience working in a camp setting as a counselor, camp administrator, instructor, or similar position for at least one year or one full summer season.
Physical Requirements
This position will require the ability to move about on rough terrain and work in outdoor environments in inclement weather. Employees must have the ability to lift or move heavy objects, such as supplies or equipment.
Special Requirements
Requires possession of a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
