Position Description
Are you a recreation professional with experience working with neurodivergent, adaptive needs, and/or elderly populations? If so, the City of Walnut Creek welcomes your application for the position of Program Coordinator. This position supervises and coordinates Community Services and programs within the Recreation & Social Services Division of the Arts and Recreation Department.

This division provides a variety of recreation programs and classes from pre-school ages to seniors, including personal enrichment, dance and movement, science and nature, sports, fashion and beauty, food and cooking and, summer day camps. It also enriches the lives of seniors and physically and developmentally disabled youth and adults by providing relevant and stimulating programs and services. Programming within the division builds a more inclusive, supportive, and engaged community through recreation and social activities with a focus on lowering the threshold to program access. Some programs are stand-alone workshops, sequential classes, presentations, and summer camps. All foster engagement and connection within our community, enhancing the well-being and quality of life for senior citizens, individuals with adaptive needs and neurodivergencies, and the greater Walnut Creek community.
Reporting to the Program Manager, this a full-time, benefitted position primarily located at Civic Park Community Center with the majority of work between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some evening and weekend hours will be required depending on programming and staff training needs.
Representative Duties
By utilizing a combination of cost recovery and community benefit services, the Program Coordinator plays a crucial role in planning and executing recreational programs and activities tailored specifically for senior citizens and individuals with disabilities in the community. Some key responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to the following three (3) key areas:
1) Program Planning and Coordination:
- Assisting in the development of a new vision for adaptive and inclusive programming and services for the Arts and Recreation Department as a whole;
- Utilizing information on market demand, feedback, and industry specific data relating to recreation, inclusion, and therapeutic resources to develop new and innovative programs for individuals of all ages with adaptive needs including classes, activities, events, and summer camps;
- Managing the scheduling of all social services programs, interfacing with course registration software (Xplore Rec), setting and implementing guidelines for program delivery, and providing content for course catalogs and other program outreach materials;
- Recruiting, contracting, onboarding, and managing/leading instructors and Hourly (part-time) on-going and seasonal program staff;
- With an emphasis on safety, overseeing and enhancing a full summer day camp program for individuals with adaptive needs;
2) Classroom and Program Space Coordination:
- Overseeing the program space at Civic Park Community Center, establishing a welcoming environment for all while maintaining adherence to policies and best practices;
- Daily operational management of a robust grant-funded senior transportation program including oversight of Hourly (part-time) Transportation Assistants and volunteers;
- Managing budgets, resources, and all equipment and spaces needed for program implementation;
- Supporting budget development and analysis;
3) Community Liaison:
- Increasing program offerings and amplifying their impact/reach by strengthening relationships with local organizations, other City programs, and community groups and acting as liaison to the Regional Center for the East Bay (RCEB);
- Performing research and data analysis to understand and meet community needs; and
- Presenting at community meetings and for boards and commissions on current programming, successes and trends.
Qualifications Guidelines
Education and Experience:
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in recreation, gerontology, special education, nonprofit leadership, recreation and parks administration or a related field, and two (2) years of experience working directly with adaptive needs youth and adults, social services programming, and/or organized recreational work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed in the . Experience overseeing and managing summer camps is highly desired.
Special Requirements:
Possession of, or ability to obtain prior to employment, a valid Class C California Driver’s License and a good driving record. Work hours may vary in accordance with the program being offered and therefore, this employee may be required to respond to calls for emergency assistance during off-duty hours.
