The Cordova Recreation & Park District (CRPD) is seeking a Program Coordinator to provide assistance in Aquatics and Youth Development.

Class Summary
Under general supervision of the Recreation Supervisor II and Senior Recreation Coordinator, provides assistance with a wide variety of recreational and social programs and services in aquatics and youth development, at a variety of recreation sites, including community centers, pools and other aquatics facilities, playgrounds, parks, schools, and other sites; assists in the design, implementation, coordination and evaluation of selected programs, classes, services, activities, and events to meet the needs of the community and District; provides a variety of functions necessary for the successful operations of designated facilities throughout the District; and maintains accurate records and reports.

Typical schedule: No more than 30 hours a week; evenings, weekends, and holidays required.

About the District
The Cordova Recreation & Park District (CRPD) is one of the largest independent special districts in Northern California serving over 128,000 residents and four school districts in the greater Sacramento area. CRPD provides over 44 parks and recreational facilities, a full-service 18-Hole course at Cordova Golf Course, as well as youth & adult sports, camps, enrichment classes, educational programs and special events for the community.

Essential Functions

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Assist in the planning, organizing, marketing, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of a wide variety of recreational programs, including aquatics, the Cordova STEAM Preschool, the HYDE Out Teen Center, contract instructor classes, sports activities, special community events, and other aquatics and youth-centered activities such as community swim teams.
  • Assist in the recruitment, assignment, training, and coordination of other part-time or volunteer support staff, including lifeguards, cashiers, and recreation leaders.
  • Enforce District and facility rules and procedures including, but not limited to, program rules, pool use, care of equipment, and admittance to facilities.
  • Perform opening and closing duties of assigned facilities; lock and arm facility with correct and effective use of the intrusion alarm system; prepare the facility to begin daily operations (if assigned).
  • Prepare, track, and maintain accurate records.
  • Prepare and maintain inventory records and make authorized purchases when required.
  • Provide exceptional customer service and utilize interpersonal skills during public contact; assist with any questions, phone calls, conflicts, and mediation, as assigned.
  • Conduct regular and ongoing inspection of pools, facilities, grounds, program equipment and facility-use permits to ensure safe, efficient, and effective operations.
  • Act as District and Departmental representative to local residents, governmental agencies, community groups, private businesses, and others regarding questions, problems, concerns, and activities in the provision of recreation programs, pool, and facility operations.
  • Provide backup and substitute (when required) for other recreation positions including, but not limited to, Pool Manager, lifeguard, front desk/administrative staff, camp staff, preschool aide, recreation leaders, and facilitators.

Minimum Qualifications

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:

  • Operations, services, and activities of assigned recreation programs in the areas of aquatics and youth development.
  • Group (youth and adult) recreational and social activities.
  • A variety of aquatics activities for youth and adults including facility and equipment use.
  • Modern methods, techniques, principles, and procedures used in the planning and supervision of recreation and aquatics programming and facilities.
  • Effective promotion and marketing of recreation and aquatics programs, services, activities, and events.
  • Principles and practices of public parks, aquatics facilities and recreation program planning, organization, and administration.
  • Rules and equipment utilized in aquatics and recreational programs and activities.
  • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Organization and effective time management skills.
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures within the area(s) of assignment (e.g., preschools; teen centers; and aquatics facilities, such as community pools and splash parks).
  • Principles and practices of efficient record keeping.

Ability to:

  • Implement activities in support of assigned recreation and aquatics programs.
  • Effectively and professionally handle and diffuse disruptive behavior among program participants (youth and adult).
  • Communicate professionally and tactfully with customers; address public and customer questions and concerns.
  • Respond to all emergency situations in a calm and effective manner.
  • Ensure safe and proper use of recreation facilities, aquatics facilities and all equipment.
  • Administer first aid and CPR-AED (once certified).
  • Gather, analyze, and report critical information.
  • Utilize strong customer service skills.
  • Multitask, plan, and organize work to meet changing priorities.
  • Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Learn and effectively use specialized recreational software.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience Guidelines – Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Equivalent to graduation from high school and a minimum of two years’ experience as a lifeguard and/or in an aquatic’s leadership role. Experience should include programming and coordinating aquatics facilities and classes, supervision of aquatics programs and facilities with a focus on risk management. Experience using Microsoft Office software (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and the ability to learn recreation programming software.

License or Certificate:

Mandatory upon hire:

  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license

Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months:

  • Certification in the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Title 22
  • Certification in Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) and Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
