Job Description
Under the general supervision of the Program Coordinator, performs a variety of duties necessary for the evaluation and marketing of animals for adoption and the development of rescue contacts and transfer of animals to rescue organizations and helps to maintain and support an active volunteer and foster program that will reduce the number of animals euthanized. Promotes humane care of animals through education and humane, pro-active animal services programs committed to preventing the suffering of animals and ending pet overpopulation. Provides support in Animal Services for the creation, coordination, organization, and publicity for animal services programs, outreach, and adoption various events.
Employee has no supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Duties
Serves in a supportive role to the Program Coordinator.
Showcases and promotes animals using social media, takes videos and photographs, and utilizes concepts of graphic design to create marketing materials and content. Includes post adoption follow-up with adopters, pet owners, and rescue partners.
Performs intake activities including collecting and inputting animal data into the department records system, administered pet vaccinations, and conducts preliminary health examinations and behavior evaluations when necessary.
Interacts with the public and provides excellent customer service during adoption events, educational outreach, themed events, promotions, and foster recruitment initiatives.
Completes various clerical duties by assisting customers and answering questions; maintaining records and collecting data; utilizes shelter records system; ensuring forms and documents are safeguarded, complete, and accurate.
Coordinates with other departments on outreach/campaign development and recruitment; coordination with sites for outreach campaigns; completing research as needed; processing various documents and applications; collecting and recording payments; preparing various reports; and handling cash and adoption paperwork and registration documents as approved by management.
Assists in implementing marketing strategies to increase adoption numbers and contributes to educational programs relating to animal welfare and safety.
Helps recruit and develop relationships with animal rescue contacts and organizations, with the goal of increasing the shelter’s life release rate by transferring animals to these groups. Further assists this goal by coordinating transport services with volunteers and other entities.
Assists in coordinating an effective pet foster program. Accepts, reviews, and submits volunteer and foster applications. Effectively and professionally communicates with foster program participants and makes appointments, manages schedules, and ensures compliance with foster program protocol.
Participates regularly in or plans, or schedules various events. Assists in the transport of equipment, the set up and tear down of event supplies, and arranges and helps to oversee the safe transport of animals to and from events.
Participates with and supports the Veterinarian Technician, assists in the transport of animals to groomers, veterinarian appointments, rescue groups, or other locations as needed.
Maintains accurate records of rescued animals and communications made in attempt to get an animal placed.
Performs regular walk through of kennel facilities to stay current on shelter population, performs assessments for animals in need of placement.
Assists customers in making pet selections, serves as adoption counselor, accurately and professionally answers questions and inquiries, assists individuals seeking lost pets or adoptable animals, responds to public inquiries regarding animal care and humane treatment of animals.
Assists in the preparation and completion of grant applications related to reducing pet overpopulation and increasing positive outcomes for animals. Collects data, various content, and reports necessary for fulfilling grant obligations.
Performs office clerical, administrative, kennel duties and cleaning, and other various tasks as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
1. High School Degree or GED; and
2. One (1) year experience in event/program promotion; and
3. Six (6) months experience handling animals in a shelter environment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Must possess a valid driver’s license or obtain one by date of hire.
2. Must have a Texas Driver’s license within 6 months of hire.
Supplemental Information
1. Treat all animals humanely, with compassion and concern, both on and off the job and convey these values to others.
2. Assist in the office with preparation of required paperwork and assist and support kennel staff with the care of animals.
3. Provides microchip services for citizen pets and pets at the facility. Includes scanning, implanting microchips, and facilitating microchip registration paperwork.
4. Be able to understand and clearly explain Killeen Animal Services’ mission, needs, and services to the public and rescue groups, and other entities as required.
5. Safely, confidently, and humanely handle various types, sizes, and temperaments of animals.
6. Learn and abide by appropriate procedures and SOPs for caring for and treatment animals.
7. Use computer programs, including shelter database, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc. to track and accurately record various information and data.
