FIRST@DU supports all first-generation and low-income students at the University of Denver (DU). FIRST@DU intends to assist first-generation and low-income students by providing resources, support, and funding to help enrich their experience through pre-orientation, academic workshops, cohort experiences (1GENU, VIP). seminars, events, mentoring, and 4D experience for all first-generation and low-income students.
Position Summary
The Program Coordinator of FIRST@DU for Cohort Programs develops programs and resources to support first-generation and low-income students focusing on cohort programs. FIRST@DU primarily serves first-generation students. The Program Coordinator reports to the Director of FIRST@DU, First-Generation Experience. The Program Coordinator supports the Senior Director in setting the vision for first-generation and low-income undergraduate and graduate student support through an intersectional approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The Program Coordinator works closely with campus and community partners including the Daniels Fund, Denver Scholarship Foundation to provide comprehensive outreach, programming, and support and persistence of first-generation students. This position supervises graduate and undergraduate students.
The Program Coordinator will work in deeply collaborative ways with the Senior Director and FIRST@DU team to: (1) utilize best practices to develop an exemplary first-generation and low-income undergraduate and graduate student experience; (2) build community and assist first-generation students in developing a sense of belonging; (3) support and advocate for first-generation students, and students from a variety of marginalized positionalities; and (4) foster the public good as centrally informed by a commitment to racial, ethnic, cultural, and other social equity outcomes on our campus and beyond.
The Program Coordinator will work evenings and weekends, as needed. This position is a full-time hourly, 1.0 FTE position reporting to the Director of FIRST@DU, First-generation experience.
Essential Functions
Cohort Programs
- Lead in the development and implementation of FIRST@DU cohort programs, including 1GENU, Davis New Mexico Scholars, Daniels Fund Scholars, and Hummel Scholars
- Collaborate with campus partners to build an institutional team approach for cohort student support
- Facilitate overall event planning of the yearly calendar and signature FIRST@DU programs for cohort programs
- Develop and coordinate the pre-orientation program for all FIRST@DU cohort programs
- Meet individually with students to support their experience and to make referrals to appropriate divisional and University departments for support
- Maintain updated notes in the appropriate FERPA protected database (Banner and INSPIRE) in a timely manner within 24 business hours of the student meeting
Supervision
- Supervise, evaluate, and train full-time graduate student assistants, and undergraduate students
- Supervise cohort program undergraduate mentors/leaders
Administration
- Support Senior Director in assessment measures for FIRST@DU
- Manage the budget for college access endeavors and cohort programs
- Collaborate with Director First-Generation College Access and Admissions to successfully transition first-generation students to DU, including assisting in coordinating visit/recruitment of cohort programs to DU
- Collaborate with community organizations on cohort scholars scholarship requirements
- Maintain updated notes in the appropriate FERPA protected database (Banner, and INSPIRE) in a timely manner within 24 business hours of the student or family interaction
- Support Senior Director in implementing first-generation best practices
- In consultation with the Senior Director, Director, Assoc. DOS, other duties as assigned to support the DoS area, Division, and University
Departmental Leadership
- Support Senior Director in creating a vision and direction for FIRST@DU and implementation
- Support the Senior Director in providing leadership and guidance for DU, focused on first-generation and low-income students’ visibility, advocacy and retention
- Coordinate with Housing and Residential Education on the residential experience of cohorts living on a residence floor
- Work in partnership with the Senior Director, Director of First-Generation Experience, DoS, Assoc. DoS, SAIE Divisional leadership, the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Inclusion & Equity Education, and The Cultural Center
- Cultivate connection and engagement of first-generation and low-income students and BIPOC students, both undergraduate and graduate students
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge and experience working with first-generation and low-income students
- Strong communication, both oral and written
- Knowledge of student development for diverse populations and the ability to translate student development theory and social justice theory into practice
- Knowledge of and ability to apply professional ethical standards, current laws, and regulations applicable to students
- Ability to productively engage across units, departments, and divisions, including building connections with relevant programs and initiatives
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Higher Education, or related field
- Experience working directly with first-generation students
- Demonstrated commitment to and progressive advancement of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual
- Progressive leadership experience in higher education or large organization
- Demonstrated advocacy and leadership related to racial, ethnic, and/ other intersectional identities
- Experience with program management and budget management
Working Environment
1. Standard office environment.
2. Unexpected interruptions occur often and stress level is moderate to high.
3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.
Physical Activities
1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time.
2. Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.

Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The salary grade for the position is 7.
Hourly Range:
The hourly range for the position is $23.50-$25.18
