Position Description
Are you a recreation professional with experience working in summer day camps, sports, drop-in activities and special events? Are you passionate about building community through people, parks, and programs? If so, the City of Walnut Creek welcomes your application for the position of Program Coordinator – Youth/Adult Sports & Summer Camps (working title: Recreation Program Coordinator)!
Receiving general direction from the Program Manager, and in collaboration with the division’s fun and hardworking administrative team, the Recreation Program Coordinator plans, organizes and provides supervision and oversight for assigned recreation programs and activities with emphasis in youth and adult sports.
More about the Sports and Camps Division:
The Sports and Camps Division of Arts and Recreation is the supportive liaison to the community for summer day camps, gymnasium programs, and youth sports. This Division promotes active lifestyle through opportunities for youth and adults, including leagues such as soccer, baseball, lacrosse, and high school sports. Our goal is to strengthen interest in sports and activity within and among the community.
This is a full-time, benefitted position primarily located at Tice Valley Gymnasium with some travel required to other City recreation sites. The majority of work will be between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., and the primary schedule will be set as either Monday through Friday or Tuesday through Saturday. Some evening and weekend hours will be required depending on programming and staff training needs.
Representative Duties
Some key responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to:
- Organizes, implements, directs, supervises and/or promotes recreation programs for youth and adult sports programs;
- Supervises recreation Hourly (part-time) staff, including determining workloads and schedules, implementing, and interpreting policies and procedures, effectively evaluating staff, and making hiring and disciplinary recommendations;
- Plans organizes, conducts, and coordinates a wide variety of recreational and community programs at City facilities, including meeting with public groups and community members to explain and promote programs, schedules, and activities;
- Assists supervisor with effective supervision and administration of assigned staff including recruiting, hiring, training, supporting payroll, performance management, coaching employees, prioritizing and assigning work; and
- Reserves facilities including gymnasiums and sport fields, liaison to community groups, special events, drop-in activities, sport leagues, and specialty camps.

Qualifications Guidelines
Education and Experience:
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in recreation or a related field, and two (2) years of relevant experience such as organized recreational work, event rentals, and/or community programming; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed in the .
Special Requirements:
Possession of, or ability to obtain prior to employment, a valid Class C California Driver’s License and a good driving record. Work hours may vary in accordance with the program being offered and therefore, this employee may be required to respond to calls for emergency assistance during off-duty hours.
