Description
Under the guidance, direction and leadership of the Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC), a dynamic not-for-profit community development organization and settlement house, the Program Director will oversee our work around public benefits education and enrollment, fresh food access and nutrition education in the Cypress Hills/East New York area. The Program Director will lead this effort, collaborating with CHLDC staff and partners to develop a single-entry point referral system for community residents, ensuring that they have their basic needs addressed and can access crucial resources such as food, health, employment, transit, and housing benefits. The Program Director will also coordinate other community-based organizations and health and human services organizations in addressing emerging needs in East New York.
Principal Duties:
- Lead staff in raising awareness about public benefits in East New York and in educating Brooklyn residents about SNAP. Design and implement outreach and communication strategies in multiple languages and in culturally relevant ways
- Hire, train/orient, supervise and evaluate a team of public benefits counselors, outreach workers and nutrition educators and interns
- Increase the enrollment of East New York residents in public benefits
- Work with food pantries to expand their supplies and connect them with citywide food resources and donated meals and CHLDC’s public benefits enrollment services
- Manage government contracts and data collection and reporting
- Design strategies to fight hunger in the community; e.g publicize existing SNAP enrollment services with residents using food pantries, assess existing websites/tools/apps that inventory neighborhood food pantries and soup kitchens
- Coordinate with management team and program directors (across program areas) to create a simplified referral data management system, test the system with residents and community partners and revise as necessary
- Facilitate the Eastern Brooklyn Emergency Response Collaborative – bringing together health and human services organizations to address crises and emerging needs in the community
- Prepare a strategic plan for CHLDC’s food insecurity work, coordinating with East New York Farms! and grassroots food pantries, assessing capacities and gaps in the neighborhood service delivery system and best practices in the field
- Collaborate with CHLDC’s fundraising team to raise funds for the continuation and expansion of the work and integration into the new Cypress Hills East New York community center
- Plan with management team members CHLDC’s ongoing response to fight food insecurity and participate in fundraising around institutionalizing the work
- Represent CHLDC at meetings with city-wide organizations fighting hunger, creating access to fresh food in low- and moderate-income, BIPOC neighborhoods and with other food policy and advocacy organizations
- Initiate and cultivate local partnerships to build a stronger safety net for East New York residents with emergency needs
- Supervise project and case managers
- All other duties as assigned
