Job Summary
The County of San Diego has current openings for Project Manager – Major Maintenance/Construction in in the Department of General Services’ Project Management Division (PMD).
This position may have a teleworking and/or flexible schedule available after an initial training period. Interviews will take place the week of September 25th, 2023, second round interviews will be the week of October 2nd week of, and JOB OFFERs will be made the week October 9th, 2023.
PMD is responsible for the design, construction, and remodel of County owned buildings and other facilities. PMD creates cross-functional teams for its projects by including internal clients, community stakeholders, other County departments, contractors, consultants and/or jurisdictional agencies. Primary acquisition strategies utilized for construction include Design-Build, Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR), and Job Order Contract (JOC.) These projects use a wide array of professional services from as-needed consultants (Architectural Design, Environmental, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, MEP Design, Geotechnical, Commissioning, etc.).
The Project Manager – Major Maintenance/Construction will support the Department of General Services in construction, directing and coordinating its major maintenance and construction development projects. The successful candidate will work independently, with consultants and with project teams to identify requirements; prepare assessments and recommendations; communicate with clients, stakeholders, and review boards; and procure and manage project execution. The ideal Project Manager – Major Maintenance/Construction will demonstrate successful achievement in the management of planning, programming, design, major maintenance and construction of new and existing buildings (i.e., vertical construction) for a local government in Southern California.
Duties and responsibilities will include but not limited to:
- Delivering projects safely, on time, on scope and on budget all while managing risks and taking advantage of potential opportunities;
- Implementing and executing assigned projects by following prescribed processes, utilizing standard tools and templates, and achieving client expectations;
- Serving as a trusted advisor to clients providing reliable, cost effective and value-added service;
- Communicating thoroughly with stakeholders; follow the “no surprises” rule;
- Facilitating project initiation, planning, execution, monitor/control, and close phases;
- Manage the content of client status reports;
- Providing direction, management and contract administration to consultants and construction contractors;
- Ensuring contractors and consultants perform agreed upon work;
- Providing technical expertise, knowledge of facilities and convey organizational acumen;
- Ensuring adherence to California public works construction law;

Minimum Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in city/regional planning, architecture, engineering, construction management or a closely related field; AND two (2) years of professional-level project management experience performing development planning, research, data analysis, computations, project coordination/ management, grants management, or management support activities in architecture/construction, OR
- Six (6) years of professional-level experience in the construction industry as a superintendent or manager of multi-trade construction projects in the performance of general construction and or specialized construction with projects valued at more than $1,000.000.
