Job Description

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: PT SECURITY

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to maintain safety, security and order within the inviting atmosphere of the library building and City library property.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Maintains a safe and secure environment for employees and patrons by conducting library rounds, responding to department calls for assistance, and monitoring security cameras. Secures the library building, collections, and library technology. Identifies and responds to special security and custodial needs.

Prevents the public from entering staff-only areas and redirects as needed. Enforces safety protocols to maintain unobstructed aisles and doorways. Prohibits any concealed weapons or restricted objects into the building; conducts daily security search of interior and exterior of building premises. Escorts staff when they leave the building for the day.

Greets library patrons and observes persons entering the building. Answers directional and informational questions with a friendly attitude. Provides information about local social service agencies upon request. Greets visitors inside and outside the building during special events, conducting welcoming and security functions. Escorts patrons to their vehicles if requested.

Informs patrons of library policies such as the Patron Conduct Policy, Computer Use Policy, and various City ordinances, and enforces the policies and laws. Proactively and discreetly handles potential problem issues and approaches such situations with the intent to de-escalate the problem. Escorts non-compliant patrons from Library premises when necessary. Identifies when situations require law enforcement and calls law enforcement for assistance. Responds to emergency situations and contacts appropriate staff and emergency personnel.

Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, incident reports, trespass notices, and other documents. Communicates with individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Participates in Library and City training requirements. May train staff regarding safety protocols.

Maintains confidentiality of departmental documentation and issues.

Operates a personal computer, email, general office equipment, telephone, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

Works with Library staff to perform miscellaneous duties such as minor custodial tasks.

Supports staff with weather emergencies by laying sandbags, salting sidewalks, lowering/raising hurricane shutters to ensure safety and accessibility.

Assists staff with set-up and break-down for daily library programs and events.

Performs other related duties as required, requested and assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma, SLED certification; supplemented with a background in security, law enforcement or military; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must be willing to work various shifts depending on the needs of the library, including evenings and Saturdays.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 30 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as fire arms, violence, or rude/irate patrons. Substantial time is spent standing monitoring the library entry and walking the library building and grounds on patrol.
