Public Communications Supervisor
In this position, you will provide strategic oversight of staff responsible for digital communications, media relations, public information, and marketing functions for programs and operations for the City of Colorado Springs.

Essential Job Functions– the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
- Create and execute the City’s overarching communications PR/marketing campaigns based on priorities set by the Mayor’s Office
- Lead programming for direct-to-resident communication from the Mayor’s Office, including the municipal and strategic planning programs, City-sponsored events, reporting projects, and a variety of community involvement activities
- Coordinate community and media briefings
- Build and oversee data-driven communications platforms and programs that increase transparency and ease access to government
- Analyze communications needs and develop strategic cross-department communications plans
- Manage customer service/citizen request processes and tool enhancement to ensure good and consistent customer service citywide
- Establish and maintain relationships with community stakeholders through various public engagement activities
- Direct, plan, and review the work of staff responsible for digital and traditional communications and marketing for City programs, operations, and messaging
- Mentor and grow abilities of other communications professionals in the department
- Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, and techniques; ensure compliance with applicable standards and specifications
- Consult with department leads throughout the City to formulate effective and creative communications campaigns that reach the messaging objectives of city leadership
- Connect and engage residents with their city services by utilizing traditional media, social media, hyper-local outreach, and public information
- Engage residents through effectively telling the story of the City government
- Build strong relationships with local media community and partner to share accurate information, proactively and reactively
- Manage one to two full-time staff members to most effectively reach constituents and stakeholders with appropriate information and messaging
- Proactively work to build the City’s brand image as an excellent place to live, work and play through messaging campaigns, events, and key partnerships
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
Knowledge of:
- Operational characteristics, services, and activities of a municipal public communications program
- Strategic communications planning, advertising, publications, and community relations procedures
- Modern office technology
- Proper English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
Ability to:
- Stay current on new trends and innovations in the field of public and media communications
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing
Successful candidates will have
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field
- Five (5) years of full-time public relations, communications, or marketing experience
One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.
Ideal candidates will also have
- Two (2) or more years of supervisory experience
- Extensive experience in media training and speech writing
- Experience in government or public policy
- Familiarity or expertise with the City of Colorado Springs itself

The City of Colorado Springs offers additional compensation depending on the position, area of assignment, and specific job assignments, including shift differential, pay differential, acting or lead, special assignment, hazard pay, longevity, cell phone allowance, uniform allowance, relocation, awards, standby, call out, compensatory time off, tuition, overtime, extra duty, incentive, holiday premium, proficiency, and vacation sell back.
