Description
The Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) seeks a Public Engagement Coordinator to join its Communications and Engagement team in facilitating and expanding public participation in transportation planning and decision-making processes. MPOs are entrusted with creating and implementing a vision for a region’s transportation system that is equitable, resilient, safe, and sustainable, and ensuring that federal funding spent on roadway and transit infrastructure supports that vision. This position reports to the Manager of Communications and Engagement and will work closely with the Public Engagement Program Manager.
Responsibilities

  • Assist the Public Engagement Program Manager in identifying and supporting opportunities for the public to engage with the MPO’s work, including the development of long-range transportation plans, project funding plans, and studies.
  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including advocates, community groups, and members of the public.
  • Plan and attend in-person and virtual meetings and events that are accessible and inclusive.
  • Discuss the MPO’s work at community meetings and events.
  • Provide administrative support to the MPO’s Regional Transportation Advisory Council.
  • Design and build surveys to collect data about the transportation planning priorities of the people in the Boston region.
  • Track engagement activities to evaluate their effectiveness at reaching a diverse and representative audience.
  • Write copy for engagement materials, including presentations, emails, and brochures.
  • Research public engagement best practices.
  • Assist with engagement and communications projects and tasks across the agency.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, communications, public relations, urban planning, or a related field, or at least three years of relevant experience, preferably in a government, nonprofit, or advocacy setting; full and part-time internship and co-op experience will be considered
  • Knowledge of current community engagement practices
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral presentation skills, and the ability to communicate effectively to a broad audience
  • An interest in urban planning, transportation planning, environmental planning, or community planning
  • Dedication to inclusive public engagement in support of transportation equity
  • Familiarity with social media and email as engagement and professional communication tools
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities

Additional Valued Qualifications

  • Familiarity with professional survey platforms such as Qualtrics and Survey Monkey
  • Familiarity with professional email marketing platforms such as MailChimp and Constant Contact
  • Fluency in Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Chinese, or Vietnamese
  • Familiarity with the Boston region and its transportation systems

Additional Information
The Boston Region MPO’s office is located in downtown Boston, in a transit-oriented and bicycle-friendly environment. Employees work on a hybrid schedule, combining time in the office with remote work. Employees must reside within a commutable distance from the MPO’s office. All employees are required to provide proof of the primary COVID-19 vaccine series and at least one booster.
