THE POSITION
With supervisor approval, incumbents may be eligible for intermittent remote work; however, they must physically reside within the State of California with the ability to report to Sacramento-based physical worksites daily if required.

IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT

The City of Sacramento’s Front Street Animal Shelter is a seeking a Public Information Coordinator who is a skilled communicator and content creator to further its mission of helping as many animals and people as possible both at the shelter and in the community. This position will be responsible for creating effective social media campaigns, email campaigns, online fundraisers, and appearing on television news and other media. The ideal candidate will be highly creative, possess exceptional writing skills, and have experience creating social media content, graphics, videos, and other content in a professional setting with demonstrable results.

To develop and implement informational and educational programs through partnerships with businesses, community groups, and other institutions; to coordinate promotional and special events for a department; and to produce a variety of informational materials and publications.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Direction is provided by higher level management staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

– Research and write informational material for departmental publications and promotions, including the writing of brochures, reports, magazine articles, newsletters, public service announcements, press releases, and related materials; edit material received from other sources.
– Initiate meetings with members of the business community and community groups to develop joint promotional ventures.
– Identify opportunities for promoting the department and its message through non-traditional venues.
– Release information to the news media and the public regarding department activities, policies, statistics, and promotional and special events.
– Represent the department in interviews with broadcast and print media.
– Respond orally and in writing to inquiries regarding departmental activities and events.
– Create or participate in the selection of drawings, charts, graphs, photographs, posters, and other illustrative materials used in publications and promotional projects.
– Design format for brochures and related materials.
– Produce graphic designs using a desk-top publishing system.
– Coordinate and stage special events to introduce City programs and facilities; recommend and contact appropriate promotional media.
– Take photographs for publications and audio-visual slide presentations; write scripts for slide and video presentations.
– May create paste-ups and copy layouts using written and illustrative materials.
– May develop time frames and budget requirements for publications and events; solicit bids and recommend vendors; recommend design, color, graphics and appropriate media in accordance with budget restraints.
– May write printing specifications, including size and face of type, paper stock, and relationships of inks and colors.
– Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:

– Basic functioning of print and broadcast news media, preferably including a familiarity with the local media marketplace.
– Event coordination and planning procedures and techniques.
– Corporate marketing strategies and practices.
– Principles and methods used in researching, organizing, writing, editing, and producing copy.
– Proper English usage, including grammar, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, and organization.
– Graphic design principles and techniques.
– Printing processes, including format, paste-up, layout, paper stocks, type faces and sizes, binding systems, and multi-color reproduction.
– Basic photography.
– Public relations and promotional methods.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Experience:

One year of experience in developing and planning events and promotional activities and in writing material for publication.

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, or a closely related field. A liberal arts degree is acceptable provided course work included a minimum of 15 semester or 21 quarter units in a field(s) outlined above.

Three years of experience in developing and planning events and promotional activities and in writing material for publication.

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college with an associate’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, or a closely related field.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Driver License:

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment. Loss of the Class C License is cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:

Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.

3. Eligibility: Candidates who pass the Training and Experience Test will be placed on the eligible list. 4. Screening Committee: (Pass/Fail)- All candidates that pass the examination and are in one of the top three ranks will have their application forwarded to the hiring department for review.
