Job Description
The University of Missouri is seeking a driven individual who will serve as the Public Safety Information Officer for the university. The PSIO is the primary spokesperson for the MU Police Department and oversees the MU Alert emergency notification system in times of crises. The PSIO also communicates regularly with the campus on public safety, encouraging faculty, staff and students to take advantage of training opportunities as well as communicating important information to help the university maintain campus safety. The position will report to the Office of Public Affairs that is responsible for representing the university to the media.
Responsibilities/Description:
- Build and maintain strong relationships with the MUPD Chief of Police and MUPD officers. Work physically in the MUPD 50% of the time.
- Work closely with the University of Missouri Emergency Management department and the Division of Information Technology to ensure that the university has the appropriate technology in place to clearly communicate in the event of a crisis.
- Work with MUPD staff to promote safety and trainings on campus.
- Work closely with Student Affairs communications team to identify safety concerns and needs among the student population, and develop a proactive communications plan to address the identified concerns.
- Serve as the university’s spokesperson for routine police matters, responding to information requests regarding police and campus safety information.
- Be the point person to operate the RAVE emergency notification system in the event of a campus crisis. Regularly drill the emergency team (at least once a month) to ensure all team members are ready to respond in the event of an emergency.
- Distribute Crime Notifications when necessary.
- Proactively identify potential safety communications concerns and offer recommendations on addressing those concerns.
- Regularly review the crisis communications plan and suggest changes as appropriate.
- Facilitate media interviews and develop preparation materials as tasked by the Director.
Salary
Salary Range: $56,864- $70,000
Grade: GGS-11

M-F; 7am-4pm, Some after hours will be required
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 4 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
Preferred Qualifications
- 3-5 years of experience, preferable with a mid-to-large organization handling public safety. Bachelor’s degree in a communication field. Able to build relationships and remain calm in a crisis.
- Preferred: Experience in crisis communications. Experience in higher education. Knowledge of media and experience serving as spokesperson for public safety.
