Position Description

The (ARTS) manages the city’s public art program, cultural partnerships grant programs, ARTS at King Street Station, the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute, and The Creative Advantage initiative in the effort to foster a city driven by creativity that provides the opportunity for everyone to engage in diverse arts and cultural experiences. The ARTS has an exciting opportunity for a Racial Equity Coordinator to support this important race and social justice work. This role partners with staff and the citywide Race and Social Justice Initiative (RSJI) to build capacity around doing anti-racist work. The Racial Equity Coordinator will work in partnership with various stakeholders to support the implementation of effective RSJI tools, strategies and policies to apply to the work of the ARTS Office. The Racial Equity Coordinator will actively support the strategic plan of the office, working to support the programming staff in development of anti-racist outcomes ensure accountability. The Racial Equity Coordinator will research on best RSJ practices, make sure that the ARTS programs and outcomes meet RSJ focus, work with the Seattle Office for Civil Rights (SOCR) to make sure it is aligned the City and SOCR.

This position will report to the ARTS Deputy Director and will work closely with other ARTS staff members, SOCR and other City employees.

Job Responsibilities

Here is more of the work you will be doing:

  • Review ARTS programs for RSJ priorities, identifies RSJ best practices and policies and makes recommendations to management on implementing procedures to better address the department’s RSJ goals and responsibilities.
  • Review of all of ARTS’ granting, public art, and gallery operations to ensure RSJ principles and determine RSJ best practices to be implemented within each of these divisions and programs.
  • Analyze the efficacy of RSJ goals within the department’s programs and make recommendations to management on procedures to implement to achieve the department’s RSJ goals. It will also develop specific RSJ principles to be applied consistently across all department programs and work.
  • Study and analyze department programs to determine whether programs are meeting RSJ goals.
  • Partner with program managers to gather information and data and analyze whether RSJ principles and best practices are being incorporated into program implementation.
  • Work with department leadership and program managers to ensure clarity of RSJ goals and assist in incorporation of goals into all department programs.
  • Partner with city departments, external, community partners and consultants to determine prevailing RSJ principles and develop relationships to ensure alignment across the city and community programs.
  • Make recommendations to management regarding training opportunities for staff and external partners to ensure alignment of RSJ principles across department programs.
  • Prepare detailed reports outlining RSJ analysis and recommendations to management as well as prepare memos and other communications to be utilized by colleagues to ensure consistent application of RSJ principles in departmental programs and work.
  • Develop written RSJ manual codifying the department’s policies and procedures to be used across the department programs and facilities.
  • Present reports, data and analysis to department leadership and other city entities.

You will be prepared for this role if you have the following:

  • Understanding of racial equity and social justice principles, institutional racism, and demonstrated ability to apply knowledge to institutional work.
  • Knowledge of RSJ theories and best practices.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to communicate at all levels effectively and tactfully, create trusted partnerships and strong relationships.
  • Ability to produce high-quality reports and presentations using qualitative and quantitative data to persuade, organize, or tell a story.
  • Project management skills, including the ability to produce, track and manage multiple deliverables with overlapping deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 suite of products for communications, presentations, and reports.

Qualifications

In addition to the ability to perform the tasks described above, you will need to possess the below required qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in either business, political science, computer science, or related field or a combination of work experience that provides the equivalent to perform the assigned work,

AND

Two (2) years of experience with research, systems operations and procedures and analysis,

OR

a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with RSJ theories, best practices, and programs.

Additional Information

This full-time regular position with full benefits is classified as a Planning and Development Specialist 2. This is a Civil Service position eligible for overtime. The full pay range for this step-progression position is $41.66 – $48.48 hourly. New employees begin at Step 1 of the pay progression, which is $41.66 hourly. Current City employees’ starting rate of pay will be based on Personnel Rules regarding promotions.

This position offers the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Employees will be expected to be in-office twice a week. Individual schedules will be based on agreement between the employee and their supervisor.
