Responsibilities*

The School of Music, Theatre & Dance is seeking a highly motivated, organized, and enthusiastic recording engineer to manage the schools concert recording and live sound reinforcement for a wide range of genres and types of ensembles including orchestral, band, choral, jazz, and chamber music.

Examples of responsibilities at performances include but are not limited to the following:

  • Manage all stereo recording of orchestral, choral, and band performances at Hill Auditorium and other venues, including providing audio feed for live stream.
  • Sound reinforcement and stereo recording of jazz ensemble and combo concerts.
  • Amplification of instruments, voices, and electronic parts for chamber music and large ensemble performances depending on repertoire.
  • Consulting with faculty and students about technical support for their performances in cases where the faculty and students are responsible for supporting themselves. This can include determining what will meet their needs, loaning equipment and training them how to use it.

Hire, train, and supervise student workers. Ensure proper staffing for supported SMTD events, coordinating student workers as needed. Approve time cards.

The person holding this position will be required to work on campus with a varied work schedule including evening and weekend hours. Hours to be determined by the Department Manager.

In addition to the above recording and sound reinforcement responsibilities, the ideal candidate would also teach one course in Performing Arts Technology, PAT 280 Sound Reinforcement, where students learn by working on SMTD productions. This would be an additional, Adjunct Lecturer position and will be assigned effort and compensation according to the LEO Union Contract/SMTD work plan.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in sound engineering, recording arts, music technology, or similar.
  • Expertise with the following technologies and techniques:
    • Concert recording for a wide range of genres and types of ensembles including orchestral, band, choral, jazz, and chamber music
    • Live sound reinforcement and mixing
    • Studio techniques for sound recording and production
    • Digital and analog audio mixing consoles and control surfaces
  • Sound recording, editing, and mixing in ProTools or other DAW
  • Experience as a teacher or trainer.
  • Impeccable organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and proactively.
  • Availability to work nights and weekends.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and interact positively with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Must be able to:
    • Routinely move audio/visual equipment weighing up to 50lbs
    • Occasionally ascend/descend ladders to service equipment
    • Work evening and weekend hours as needed

Desired Qualifications*

  • Graduate degree in sound engineering, recording arts, music technology, or similar.
  • Experience with some or all of the following technologies and techniques:
    • Dante digital audio networks
    • Video production
    • Live streaming
    • Theatrical lighting
    • Video projection
