Under general supervision, assists with the delivery of general recreation programs and services to the community. This position is classified as non-exempt and is subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime regulations.

  • Assists with monitoring weeknight and weekend Recreation Center facility use, including athletic programs and rentals; communicates and enforces rules and regulations to citizens using the Recreation Center.
  • Performs periodic housekeeping duties to maintain a clean and safe environment at the Recreation Center, including the setting up and breaking down of equipment and facilities.
  • Assists in the recruiting, training, supervising, and scheduling of limited service employees and volunteer staff.
  • Recruits sponsors, vendors, performers, and other contractors or services for special events and assigned programs at the Recreation Center.
  • Assists in the creation and distribution of promotional materials for assigned recreation programs.
  • Maintains updated registration and program records by entering registrations and facility reservations in the computer system and accepting payment of appropriate fees.
  • Monitors budget revenue and expenditures through Parks and Recreation software and provides input for budget requests by determining community needs.
  • Serves as the alternate clerk for the Parks & Recreation Advisory Board.
  • Maintains cooperative and effective working relationships with businesses, schools, civic clubs, contractors, and other local agencies involved in public recreation activities.
  • Represents the department at conferences, school functions, job fairs, and workshops.
  • Utilizes community and staff input and other resources to develop new program ideas.
  • Plans and coordinates the Senior Trip Program.
  • Manages Town Hall Artist Exhibit by coordinating and scheduling local artists for display.
  • Posts weekly rental schedules at each facility.
  • Creates and publishes quarterly brochure.
  • Manages and updates Parks and Recreation website.
  • Manages front desk and performs various office duties, including but not limited to:
  • Responds professionally and courteously to citizen inquiries pertaining to all aspects of Parks and Recreation programs through phone, email, and in person communication.
  • Inventories supplies and equipment and places orders as necessary within stated guidelines.
  • Picks up incoming mail and delivers outgoing mail each day.
  • Maintains cash drawer at front desk.
  • Attends continuing education classes, conferences, and workshops.
  • Performs other duties as required.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Fax machine, computer, copier, telephone, and other assigned office equipment; cleaning equipment.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: This position reports to the Recreation Supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Employee exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, both hot and cold weather.
  • Must be able to physically perform all basic life operational functions.
  • Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures.

JOB CONTEXT: This position works 40 hours per week during the seven day workweek. Some weekend and night duty may be necessary to fulfill the requirements of the job and must be approved by the Parks and Recreation Director. The stress level of this job is low to moderate.

QUALIFICATIONS OF CLASS:

EDUCATION: Associates degree with a concentration in Parks and Recreation or a related field preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Two years of experience in recreation related programs and activities preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of safety precautions applicable to various programs and scenarios.
  • General knowledge of community recreation and athletic programs.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and supervise programs; ability to teach and work effectively with different age groups throughout various programs.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license. North Carolina commercial driver license with passenger endorsement preferred or ability to acquire such. CPR and First Aid Certifications or ability to acquire such.
