Description
The White Deer Park Nature Center is seeking a friendly, motivated Recreation Activities Specialist to plan, implement, and supervise environmental education programs, activities, and camps for all ages!
Examples of Duties
Plans, implements, and supervises environmental education programs, camps, and activities for all ages, occasionally on weeknights and weekends; supervises activities at the White Deer Park Nature Center; oversees work of volunteers; assures participants use facilities according to policy.
Assures participant safety and security; calls for medical or law enforcement support when needed; answers questions about events and addresses concerns; assists with building maintenance and room set-up.
Uses recreation software; performs a variety of office assistance tasks associated with operations and program administration such as maintenance of program database and researching new programs or fees; maintains participant statistics; assists other departmental staff with the details of special town and departmental events (Groundhog Day, Trick-or-Treat the Trail, Independence Day, etc.); performs related tasks as required.
Builds and cultivates partners and sponsors; designs promotional materials and strategies to market the facilities and programs.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must be able to safely reposition classroom tables and chairs, including folding and unfolding tables and chairs and moving them about the facility. Applicants must be able to safely lift/move heavy items (i.e., 25-pound bags of bird seed, boxes of supplies, etc.).
Applicant must have a high school diploma (or equivalent).
Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
Applicant must have a strong background in environmental education and/or recreation program development and marketing.
Applicant must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Publisher, Outlook, and Word).
Applicant must be extremely organized and able to multi-task.
Applicant must be able to complete tasks independently.
Applicant must be able to evaluate evidence-based programs and report on conclusions from obtained data.
Applicant must be available mornings, afternoons, some evenings between 2:00 PM and 10:00 PM, and occasional weekends.
Strong preference will be given to applicants with education or experience in the environmental education field and those who have or are working toward their NC Environmental Education Certification.
Additional Information
This position may be scheduled for up to 20 hours per week.

Closed on Sunday and Monday
October – March
12:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Closed on Sunday and Monday
**The Nature Center is available for rental outside of normal operating hours and on days when the Nature Center is closed to the general public.**
Individual work schedules will vary and include daytime hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
A monthly staffing schedule will be completed by the supervisor in advance.
