The Parks and Recreation Department’s Recreation Aide is a year-round part-time position (no benefits). The position requires availability to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings/nights, weekends, and holidays. This position is not intended to work more than 29 hours per week.
Essential Functions
Essential Functions
- Setup and breakdown of equipment, including; tables, chairs, audio/visual equipment, etc., for various private rentals, events, meetings, and programs/activities.
- Overall knowledge of differing sports for set up and breakdown of daily gymnasium activities.
- Interact with customers to provide information in response to inquiries about processes and/or services.
- Promote facility services and events.
- Monitor participants and spectators to maintain order and discipline.
- Open and close facilities for programs, activities, special events, and reservations.
- Responsible for accepting payments for fees and services and reconciling cash on hand with daily receipts.
- Operate assigned office equipment, including cash registers and computer software/systems.
- Perform daily maintenance and custodial tasks on a regular schedule.
- Complete required reports such as accident, incident, membership, and attendance reports.
- Provide support for various programs and special events for the Department, including the Culpeper Cycling Century, Wicked Bottom 5K, Sports Tourism Activities, Camps, Programs, Clinics, etc.
- Perform other duties as required.

- Ability to effectively communicate ideas and proposals verbally.
- Demonstrated ability to provide the highest level of customer service.
- Must be available to work a variable schedule to include days, evenings, and weekends.
- Some knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of community recreation.
- Able to communicate effectively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and staff.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.
- Must have the physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office-related equipment, such as but not limited to a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
- Must be at least 16 years on or before hire.
- Completion of the tenth grade or an equivalent combination of education and experience. High school diploma or GED, preferred.
- Availability to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings/nights, weekends, and holidays is required.
- Experience as a cashier or with a point-of-sale system and some experience providing customer service is preferred.
- Experience working at or directing camps and/or clinics is preferred.
Special Requirements
- Must possess satisfactory results of a criminal history background check.
- Possession of First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications, or the ability to obtain within 6-months of hire date.

Working Conditions
Work is performed in a high public use recreation facility where loud noise and multiple events and activities at one time may cause a distraction. May involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds). Must be able to operate office and computer equipment. Special Events – outdoor work at times in inclement weather and the moving of heavy equipment.
