Examples of Duties
Under close supervision is responsible for the direct leadership of a wide variety of recreation activities, nature activities and special events.
Examples of Essential Duties
- Assists in the planning, scheduling, promoting and coordination of a variety of recreation activities, nature activities and special events in a heavily programmed recreation center, both indoor and outdoor.
- Plans and leads a diversified program of activities in the following categories: performing and cultural arts, sports, fitness, social, nature, hobbies and therapeutic recreation.
- Recruits, trains and coordinates the work of volunteers.
- Supervises part-time recreation and nature staff.
- Works under directed supervision of full time recreation or nature staff.
- Meets with local residents to determine leisure activity needs.
- Inspects facilities to make certain that structures, areas and equipment are safe, adequate and functioning properly.
- Prepares program statistical reports.
- May include regular maintenance of athletic areas, recreation areas, nature venues or general park sites.

Required Qualifications
Possession of a high school diploma or an equivalent
Plus
Two years successful experience as a playground leader, recreation leader, recreation specialist, teacher, or worker in a closely allied field.
Preferred Qualifications
Sufficient skill in an appreciation of all activities conducted at a recreation center to develop a well-balanced, diversified program; a practical knowledge of the organization of leagues, clubs, tournaments, exhibits, demonstrations and entertainment; skill in at least three of the following types of activities: athletics, dramatics, story-telling, low-organized games, social recreation, informal discussion, nature study, folk dancing, music, handicrafts; ability to secure effective use of volunteer leaders; a knowledge of first aid.

Possession of a valid driver’s license equivalent to a noncommercial class C Maryland driver’s license is required at the time of application.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
Qualified applicants will be assigned a rating based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as submitted on their application and supplemental questions. Conditions of Employment
Employees hired after July 1, 2022 are required to participate in the Baltimore County Employees’ Retirement System, with very limited exceptions.
This position requires travel between recreation sites; working evenings, weekends or holidays when necessary; and working a flexible schedule according to program needs.

Salary
Annual Salary review – Step increases may be granted on anniversary date based on satisfactory job performance
General Increases – Cost of living increases and adjustments may be granted as legislated.
Longevity Increases – In accordance with the specific pay schedule, a full-time merit or classified employee may receive a longevity increase, equivalent to one step, upon completion of a certain number of years of classified service with the County.
