Description
St. Louis County Department of Parks and Recreation has over 70 parks and 6 recreation centers within its system. We are currently seeking creative, dynamic recreation leaders looking to grow their careers in a diverse park system. Currently, there are vacancies at both the Affton Community Center (9801 Mackenzie Road) and Kennedy Recreation Center (6050 Wells Road).
The typical starting salary range for this position is between $47,486.40-$56,992.00 annually depending on the candidate’s qualifications and experience as well as budgetary considerations. Examples of Duties
- Plans, organizes, coordinates and directs personnel, volunteers and recreation activities at a major recreation complex, park and major recreation events occurring at off site locations.
- Supervises full-time, seasonal, and part-time staff.
- Oversees and directs the development and presentation of special recreation events and activities through subordinate staff and supervisors including concerts, corporate picnics, fairs, festivals, athletic competitions and tournaments.
- Establishes and maintains on-going public relations; contacts community organizations, businesses, agencies and other interested outside parties to promote recreational events participation, and coordinate sponsorship for special events.
- Prepares and recommends the annual budgets for the complex and recreation events; recommends personnel, equipment and resources needed to effectively conduct recreation events and programs within the facility and at off site locations.
- Directs the implementation of policies and practices utilized in planning and directing programs and activities in the facility and at off site location.
- Supervises the daily operation and proper maintenance of a major recreation complex (some locations include a pool, gym, and/or ice rink).
- Establishes and coordinates procedures for building maintenance and utilization of equipment and supplies.
- Directs the creation and writing of information for promotional fliers and brochures.
- Represents the Department of Parks and Recreation to various groups within the community to advise the public of recreational programs, events and activities.
- Prepares and finalizes rental agreements for the use of recreation facilities and equipment.
- Directs the preparation of various reports designed to monitor the effectiveness of recreation programs within the facility; negotiate facility use.
- Sets goals and objectives for the recreation complex.
- Coordinates training of entire recreation complex staff.
- Prepares invoices and billing contracts for equipment and supplies used for special rental groups throughout the year.
- Responds to public inquiries regarding the events, programs and activities associated with the complex and off site recreation events.
- Interprets and enforces rules and procedures regarding public participation in events, programs and activities within the complex.
- Conducts periodic staff meetings with personnel at the complex for the purpose of disseminating information and evaluating activities; attends staff meetings with administrative superiors.
- Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Parks and Recreation or a related field and a minimum three years of experience in recreation administration preferably working within a recreational facility and including experience working in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant’s education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available.
The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant’s earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.
The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.
All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.

St. Louis County offers its employees many excellent benefits with paid medical insurance, 20 days of PTO (paid time off) the first year and increasing with seniority, and 11 paid holidays. Employees hired for full time employment will participate in the St. Louis County retirement plan where they contribute 4% of their salary to the defined benefit plan with vesting after 7 years.
