ABOUT THE POSITION
- Develop and implement recreational programs and activities suitable for individuals of different age groups and interests, considering the specific location (Cultural Center, Youth Center, or Recreation Center).
- Interacts with public and private agencies, organizations, and individuals to plan and coordinate program activities.
- Develops, plans, organizes, and schedules recreational activities, special events, services, facilities, and equipment.
- Supervises, trains, assigns, schedules, and evaluates the performance of recreational personnel.
- Assist in the preparation and management of the departmental budget, including tracking expenses, allocating resources, and seeking funding opportunities.
- Create, promote, and market recreational programs through various channels, such as social media, flyers, and community outreach, to attract participation and raise awareness.
- Communicates with local media personnel to announce upcoming recreational events.
- Collects registration fees for leagues/tournaments/recreational services and deposits money with the City Treasurer.
- Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers and staff members involved in recreational programs, ensuring they adhere to established guidelines and safety protocols.
- Enforces all disciplinary actions and safety/sanitary/health standards, rules, and regulations.
- Prepares reports and maintains records.
- Oversees the maintenance and care of recreational/sports facilities, grounds, and equipment and schedules usage.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- The following duties pertain to the Recreation Division only:
- Organizes sports leagues and tournaments and registers teams.
- Interprets and explains game rules, organizes sports teams, and/or officiates at recreational games and events.
- Records information about events and games, such as participants’ names, scores, forfeits, violations, protests, league standings, schedules, etc.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
Will possess knowledge of:
- Complex principles and practices of outcome-based planning, administering, evaluating, and coordinating recreation and community services.
- Principles, and practices of multipurpose facility management, including (rental, operations, and supervision.
- Budgeting practices.
- Safety, sanitary, and health standards and regulations.
- First aid and emergency procedures.
- Community agencies, organizations, and resources.
- Principles and practices of employee supervision, training, and evaluation.
- Rules and regulations applicable to sporting events.
- Modern office procedures, methods and equipment including computers.
Will have the ability to:
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and interact with the public.
- Prevent emergency situations from arising by recognizing and correcting dangerous situations.
- Enforce rules and regulate the conduct and activity of participants.
- Stimulate interest and enthusiasm among constituents.
- Supervise, train, and evaluate support staff.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Requires:
- Education and/or experience equivalent to three (3) years of full-time work planning or coordinating organized recreational activities/sports; demonstrate proficiency in the basic fundamentals of administering and coordinating recreational programs.
- Depending upon the needs of the City, the incumbent of this class may need to demonstrate fluency in both Spanish and English as a condition of employment.
- Valid Fingerprint Clearance Card.
- A valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
- Residency in the US and within 25 miles of the City of San Luis.
Desired/Preferred:
- Bilingual in Spanish.
- San Luis residency.
