Description
The Cosumnes Community Services District (District) is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of the residents, businesses, visitors, and employees within our diverse community. We are seeking candidates who are looking to grow, develop, and have a passion for Recreation. The internships at the District are part-time, temporary positions.

Our Internships provide active college students with opportunities to grow, explore career paths, and connect with others in their field of study. In addition, interns have the opportunity to make positive contributions and serve the community in a meaningful way.

Types of internship programs currently available:

General Recreation Internship:
This program is designed for students registered and actively enrolled at a College or University who need an internship to fulfill program requirements. The internship hours and weeks may vary depending on need as well as college internship requirements.

Objectives of Internship include:

  1. To apply academic knowledge of recreation in a practice setting
  2. To explore career opportunities in recreation
  3. To assess and expand competencies in recreation
  4. To connect and acquire in-depth understanding of recreation programs
  5. To develop and practice ethical and professional behaviors in a work setting

Recreation Therapy Internship:
This program is designed for students in their final semester. Students must be registered at the University for the Internship the same semester that they begin the internship in an accredited Recreation Therapy program. The internship will be a minimum of 560 hours (40 hours a week, 14 weeks). Additionally, if intern completes 650 hours, the District will pay for the NCTRC exam. This internship will meet the requirements for the NCTRC Job Task Analysis.

Applicants for this internship opportunity must attach a Resume, Cover Letter and at least one letter of Recommendation to their application.

Objectives of Internship include:

  1. To apply academic knowledge of therapeutic recreation in a practice setting
  2. To develop clinical practice skills and abilities under the guidance of a professionally certified Recreation Therapist
  3. To assess and expand the student’s competencies in therapeutic recreation
  4. To acquire in-depth understanding of how therapeutic recreation into health and human service delivery systems
  5. To develop and practice ethical and professional behaviors in a work setting
  6. To develop an understanding of critical issues related to the practice of therapeutic recreation

Please note: Intern is required to complete a project approved by the agency supervisor.

Internship Periods:

Spring internships (Recreation Therapy and General Internship):

  • Application period begins typically in September
  • Interviews will be held typically in November
  • Internship typically runs January through May, depending on internship requirements

Summer Internship (General Internship Only):

  • Application period begins typically in February
  • Interviews will be held typically in April
  • Internship typically runs May through August, depending on internship requirements

Fall Internship (Recreation Therapy and General Internship):

  • Application period typically begins in May
  • Interviews will be held typically in July
  • Internship typically runs August through December, depending on internship requirements

Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.   • Assists in planning, implementing and leading participants in a variety of recreation programs specific to a program area;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are a necessity including knowledge of basic office equipment and use of computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint;
  • Provides courteous and professional service to all program participants, facility users, CSD personnel and the public;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication working relationships with other employees, participants, and the public;
  • Initiative and willingness to learn with a strong desire for continued learning, and an interest in recreation and activity planning is required.

Typical Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office environment and/or outside in various types of weather. Incumbents may be exposed to noise, moisture, dust, vibrations, heat and cold. Work may take place and require travel in a vehicle to and from off-site indoor and outdoor locations throughout the District.
Qualifications
Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered qualifying at the sole discretion of the District. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled in college as a student and working towards a bachelors or graduate degree in Parks & Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, or related field;
  • Applicants must be over the age of 18.
