JOB TITLE: Latchkey Leader
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt Part Time
DEPARTMENT: Child Care Program
SUPERVISOR: Recreation Coordinator Family Services
SALARY: $13.00-15.00 Per Hour
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
To provide supervision for participants daily, grades Kindergarten to sixth grade. Latchkey Leaders will be required to interact with participants during games, assist with homework, and assist children in creating crafts. Latchkey Leaders will be required to run scheduled activities, oversee a group of children, and assist with minor discipline issues. Applicants should be outgoing, patient, creative, and enjoy children.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Communicate with the public in a positive manner.
- Ability to react and respond in a calm and positive manner to unexpected situations or occurrences during program hours.
- Coordinate, relate, and provide support for program participants.
- Knowledge to provide support for daily activities for the program and ability to direct and lead activities.
- Works effectively with program leaders, participants, and volunteers.
- Enforce a variety of program rules, as well as maintains discipline and reports any behavioral issues to the supervisor.
- Actively participate in program activities and events as well as help prepare and assist in crafts
- Actively aid with program participants while learning new skills such as swimming, roller skating, and bowling.
- Maintain a calendar or activities, meetings, and various events assigned.
- If 18 years of age:
- Transport participants in a 15-passenger van to and from school during the week.
- Ensure the safety of all participants in the vehicle.
- Maintain discipline while transporting participants.
- Exercise and obey traffic and highway safety regulations.
- Preform pre-trip inspections daily on vehicle.
- Maintain vehicle cleanliness, fuel the vehicle when needed, and report defects or problem with the vehicle to the Recreation Coordinator- Family Support.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.

- Respond to requests and inquiries from the public.
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Work personably with the public and other professionals in times of conflict or crisis.
- Adapt to change and ability to problem solve.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted, City staff, and the public.
- Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
- If 18 years old or older:
- Knowledge of traffic and highway safety regulations.
- Maintain satisfactory driving record to meet City insurance regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB
Required:
Be at least 15 years of age.
Understand the interworkings of the programs.
Have a valid drivers license or permit.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 30 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
Working Environment:
Both indoor and outdoor environment; irregular working hours, including some nights and weekends.
