Description
Organizes, programs and participates in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor recreation activities for varying age groups and interests. Supervises part time personnel and volunteers as required. Provides support to the Recreation Supervisor for access to programs, facilities, and services. Plans and conducts all recreational programming including but not limited to summer camp, after school program, tackle football program, athletic leagues, senior/elderly programming, and facility/center operations. Provides support for department special events before, during, and after the event as required. Instructs individual or groups in rules of games, skill development and safety. Prepares, reviews, and submits all program related reports and documents- program proposals, attendance sheets, field trip rosters, evaluation forms, etc. Evaluates activities orally and in writing and makes recommendations for improvement. Researches recreation trends and participates in community engagement to develop quality events, sport, recreation and leisure programs for implementation in the community. Ensures the safety of all program, activity, and event participants and vendors by following City policies and procedures. Must be flexible in work schedule as schedule will include nights, weekends, and holidays and is subject to change depending on departmental demands. Assigned location subject to change at the discretion of the City. Performs related work as required.
Typical Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent. Bachelor’s degree in Parks and Recreation or closely related field preferred. One (1) year or four (4) seasons of full time paid experience involving recreation programs preferred. Experience in organizing and overseeing large groups and/or special events; planning, coordinating, and implementing recreation programs and summer camps. Possess experience, maturity, enthusiasm, and a strong desire to be a positive role model. Obtains and maintains First Aid/CPR AED certifications within one year of hire. Certified Parks and Recreational Professional (CPRP) preferred. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with co-workers, parents, program participants, coaches, officials, and volunteers. Must have strong computer skills including the ability to operate spreadsheets and word processing programs at a proficient level. Knowledge of RecTrac preferred. Must demonstrate sound work ethics. Must act in a fair a consistent manner. Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity. A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Must be able to pass FDLE Level 2 background check. Specific abilities include seeing, reading, hearing and talking. Must be able to work in sometimes outside adverse weather condition. Running, standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, pushing, and pulling required.

Employees are paid biweekly. The pay range consists of a minimum and maximum salary. Initial appointment is usually made at the minimum salary of the pay range, but a higher salary may be considered for an especially well qualified candidate or to meet unusual needs. Annual merit increases of up to 3% up to the maximum of the pay range are based on fully effective job performance, or above, and are not automatic. Eligible Fire department combat employees receive annual merit increases of up to 4%.
Group health insurance is paid for by the City; 100% for full time employees and 50% for eligible dependents.
Paid leave includes: Vacation – accrue nine (9) days annually with additional days awarded for longevity; Sick Leave – accrue twelve (12) days annually; Holidays – thirteen (13) days off; Personal Days – two personal days after six months of service.
Pension plan: General Employees’ Retirement System participation is required for all eligible employees. Each employee contributes a tax deferred deduction of 10% of their salary to the plan and the City contributes a like amount. The defined benefit pension plan is based on the average of the last three base salary years times 3% times years of service. If an employee leaves the employ of the City prior to seven (7) year vesting or retirement, their contribution, with interest, is refundable. Fire pension participants contribute 11.6% and are required to participate in the Pompano Beach Police & Firefighters’ Retirement System.
Other benefits offered to City employees include: cost of living adjustments (when applicable), tuition reimbursement, tax deferred savings plan, credit union services, direct deposit, sick leave bank, sick leave to vacation conversion, employee assistance program, Deferred Retirement Option Plan (DROP), Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Account (VEBA), and a four day work week for certain positions.
Part time employees are not eligible for benefits and benefits may vary depending on bargaining units.
