Job Description
The Molasses Flood is looking for a Technical Game Designer, mid or senior level, to help drive the design team’s technical implementation work, prototype systems, and identify and solve gameplay implementation and improve the day-to-day game design workflow. The Technical Game Designer will be responsible for determining how best to execute the design of the title within the constraints of Unreal Engine, and to recognize when to elevate implementation work to engineering. In addition to being a key member of the game design team, the Technical Game Designer will also be a bridge between Design and Engineering by creating and documenting gameplay systems and processes to assist and guide the Design team to game completion.
This is a full-time salaried position, reporting to the Lead Gameplay Designer. This job could be performed either working a hybrid model out of our office in the greater Boston area, or remote within the contiguous US states. Relocation assistance is available for moving to the Boston area. Regardless of location, all staff works on a schedule aligned to US eastern time.
Responsibilities
- Prototype a variety of systems that adhere to best practices established by engineers and design leads.
- Implement long-term sustainable game systems with flexible architecture that scales up.
- Support the entire design team by developing basic tools, asset pipelines and processes, and clearly documenting and maintaining them.
- Provide support and guidance to designers to extend the reach and possibilities of the design systems and team
- Establish best practices and help designers troubleshoot technical issues.
- Communicate out updates in best practices and tool status to the team and be on the look-out for opportunities to get feedback for iterative improvements.
Qualifications
Qualifications
- Demonstrated understanding of game design and development principals and the processes used to achieve them.
- A strong technical background in scripting (visual or otherwise).
- The ability to communicate with engineering, art, and production fluently and frequently.
- Broad interest in all aspects of game design, from second-to-second combat to metagame, and economy.
- Curiosity, kindness, initiative, and a positive and professional can-do attitude.
- Candidates must have a US work permit or citizenship.
Nice to Haves
- Previous experience as a Technical Designer or Game Designer in the game industry.
- Strong UE4 experience.
- Experience working with procedural generation systems.
- Design experience with systems heavy action/adventure games.
- Ability to read and understand C++.
- Experience writing game logic in C++ or C#.
The expected yearly salary range for this position is $80,000 – $130,000 USD, negotiable. Salary offered will be based upon a number of factors, including but not limited to: skill set, years and quality of experience, and suitability for the role.
