Definition

The City of Martinez Recreation Department is seeking motivated, energetic, team-oriented individuals who enjoy working with children and are serious about having fun!

Under general supervision to direct, organize and supervise recreation programs and community events; set up City facilities and equipment; maintain facilities and equipment; follow oral and written instructions.Incumbents may be asked to work in any recreation program which includes: Athletics, Senior Center, or Special Events. The Recreation Leader III within the Recreation Division will lead exciting youth and adult development programs, including school-age programs, adult sports activities, and special community events. The ideal candidate will possess experience coordinating recreation programming and have exceptional customer service skills.
Representative Duties
The following list of duties is intended to describe the various types of work that may be performed and is not intended to be an all-inclusive list of duties:

  1. Schedule and manage recreation programs, activities, and events.
  2. Serve as site leader of program site, overseeing the implementation of program activities, procedures, and goals.
  3. Develop and implement program curriculum, schedules, and timelines. Supervise other department staff, volunteers, and contractors.
  4. Facilitate problem-solving.
  5. Develop activities for group recreation and community events.
  6. Develop program objectives.
  7. Prepare and maintain reports and records of program activities.
  8. Set up and break down at City facilities and equipment; maintain facilities and equipment.
  9. Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor in area of assignment.

Qualifications/Education/Experience
Qualifications

  • Minimum Age: 18 years of age.
  • Equivalent to two years of paid or volunteer work as a group leader or lead worker in an organized, recreation or community service program with specific expertise or experience in program area of recruitment.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain, a California Class C Driver License.
  • Experience working with children in a sport setting, day camp, child care program, youth program or summer camp is desired.
  • Appropriate clearances from background check/fingerprinting and documentation of a negative skin test for TB within the last two (2) years are required.
  • Be able to obtain certification in American Red Cross Adult/Pediatric First Aid/CPR and AED or equivalent within 90 days of employment.

Knowledge of:

  • Common sports, games and recreation activities appropriate for all ages.
  • Youth supervision and leadership techniques.
  • Concepts of program risk management and safe work practices.

Ability to:

  • Supervise and lead youth of various ages.
  • Communicate effectively and possess excellent interpersonal skills while interacting with program participants, co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Handle and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Provide reliable and dependable assistance to the assigned program areas.
  • Provide creativity and enthusiasm to the assigned program areas.
  • Work outdoors in a variety of weather and temperature conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office and/or recreational facility setting and use standard office and/or recreation equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Must possess the physical stamina to lift and move tables and chairs and arrange facilities for community events and/or meetings. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, and walk on uneven surfaces to participate in recreational activities; and push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employees may work in the field and are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels, cold and/or hot temperatures, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards. Incumbents may be exposed to blood and body fluids rendering First Aid and CPR and are required to wear appropriate attire for the recreation activity to which they are assigned. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS
May be required to work a varied schedule of hours, which may include early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays, at a variety of City facilities. This is a temporary part-time position. The successful candidate would be required to work variable hours. Hours can vary from 10-30 hours per week. Incumbents may be required to work weekends, evenings, and holidays
