Definition

This recruitment is to establish an eligibility list to fill current part time vacancies within the Recreation and Community Services Department.

FILING DEADLINE

WORK SCHEDULE

This is a non-benefited, at-will part-time position. Temporary/seasonal/part-time employment status does not qualify for City benefits, except for those required by law. Part-time shifts may not exceed 20 hours per week, or 950 hours on a fiscal year basis (July 1 through June 30). Part-time positions are “at-will”. There are no rights to employment and employment may end at any time with or without cause or advance notice.

Candidates may be require to work irregular hours, various shifts, weekends, holidays and/or on-call status. Working hours to be assigned at the discretion of the Recreation and Community Services Department.

THE POSITION

Under the general supervision of a Department supervisor or manager, organize, conduct and supervise assigned recreational programs and special activities for adults and children; and perform other job related duties as required.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to provide a representative list of the various types of work that may be performed. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job class, and incumbents may expect to perform other related duties.

Organizes, conducts and supervises free play and team activities of adults and children in outdoor and indoor play areas; organizes, officiates and instructs in games such as basketball, softball, football, baseball, soccer, volleyball, badminton and ping pong; teaches fundamentals of play and sportsmanship in recreational activities; supervises and oversees assigned center activities; explains, demonstrates and conducts games; organizes and conducts events and programs including contests, meets, tournaments and social events; assists in planning and organizing holiday and vacation programs; organizes and instructs various club activities; may collect and account for money received; keeps records and prepares reports; may administrate first aid; assists in promoting interest in the use of recreational facilities; conducts pre-trip inspection of assigned vehicle, ensures vehicle is functional and operational; maintains vehicle usage logs and servicing records; reports necessary repairs of assigned vehicle; maintains assigned vehicle clean; operates a variety of office equipment; maintains general program records and files; may oversee the work of part time and temporary recreational staff.

Qualifications

Knowledge of methods, practices and equipment used in maintaining an effective and cooperative recreational and special activities program; policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using the recreational facilities and equipment; basic theory and philosophy of recreation and its application to individual and group behavior; safe driving practices; applicable provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and ability to organize, assign, train and supervise adults and children involved in recreational programs; conduct recreational activities; organize groups for participation in a diversified recreational program; stimulate confidence and enthusiasm and mix readily with various groups; establish and maintain effective and cooperative relationships; demonstrate a degree of skill in the field of recreational activities; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; drive the recreational van safely and efficiently; train and oversee the work of assigned personnel.

Requirements

Any combination of training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain this knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Prior paid recreation experience is desirable.

Education: Junior Status in high school is required. Completion of college level course work in Recreation and related areas is desirable.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid California Class “C” driver’s license issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles and a good driving record.

PHYSICAL TASKS AND ENVIROMENTAL CONDITIONS:

While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects; ascend and descend stairs; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, or running; move about on hands and knees; bend body downward and forward, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles; reach with hands and arms; speak and hear; and push, pull and/or lift up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.

The work environment described here is representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Incumbents in this classification typically work at recreation facilities (parks) where there may be extreme temperatures, exposure to sun, dirt and/or dust and on occasion in a normal office environment.

EMERGENCY DISASTER WORKER
