Description
Apply NOW for these part time positions with the Recreation Division. These positions will be filled as soon as possible, so please apply immediately. The current opening is utilized part-time, throughout the year for fall and winter sports programs, spring and summer sports programs, summer camps, and various other openings within Recreation.
If you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted directly by the Department. Positions may include day, evening, holiday and weekend shift work and require work in the sunlight and the elements.
Minimum age for any position is 16. All new employees will be subject to drug/alcohol screening, TB testing, and will be fingerprinted prior to beginning work. Required certifications must be submitted prior to employment.

Qualifications we’re looking for
MLK Jr. program staff:
- Must possess the desire and ability to work with youth from elementary to high school age. Be a positive role model to improve the lives of youth in a recreational and educational environment.
- Candidates must have a desire to work with children and adolescents, be self-motivated, take initiative, and work well as a team.
Camp Counselor:
- Must possess the desire and ability to lead recreation activities for elementary age students in a structured day camp setting and interact effectively with the public.
- Must possess or be willing to acquire First Aid and CPR/AED Adult with CPR Child/Infant Certification.
Game Official (Umpire/Referee):
- Must possess thorough knowledge of game rules, ability to learn and demonstrate proper mechanics, positioning and game management, and remain mobile and mentally focused for game duration.
- Must possess good listening skills and communicate effectively.
Ball Field Maintenance:
- Must possess ability to prepare field for sports, such as baseball, softball, soccer, flag football, lacrosse, etc., using appropriate tools and equipment to maintain and groom ball fields.
- Must possess good listening skills and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Coaching:
- Must possess ability to work with children ages 5-13 in various sports.
- Must possess knowledge of game rules and ability to demonstrate game mechanics.
- Must be able to teach positioning and game management.
- Must be organized, possess good listening skills and communicate effectively.
Education, Experience and Special Requirements:
- Typical education would include high school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment as a student, and some experience or knowledge in the assigned activity.
- Typical experience would include some experience as a participant, coach, official, or advisor in the assigned activity.
- Possession of the appropriate California driver’s license is highly desirable, but not required.
- Must possess or be willing to acquire valid Basic First Aid Certification and CPR/AED Adult with CPR Child/Infant Certification.

Examination Process: An oral board interview, written examination, practical exercise, or any combination thereof, will be administered.

Selection Process: Final appointment is contingent upon:
- Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check.
- Passing a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test.
Veteran’s Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating “Honorable Discharge” from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.

Holidays:
An average of thirteen and a half per year. Fire Association covered employees receive a payment in lieu of holidays. Holiday compensation for Redding Peace Officers Association and Redding Police Managers Association employees has been converted to base pay.
Vacation:
Two weeks per year up to the fourth year of service, three weeks up to nine years of service, three and a half weeks up to fourteen years of service, four weeks up to nineteen years of service, four and a half weeks up to twenty-four years of service, five weeks after twenty-four years of service. For accrual rates for Fire Department shift employees, refer to MOU. Part-time and temporary employees may be eligible for some vacation/paid time off benefits.
Sick Leave:
Twelve working days of sick leave are accrued each year. Unused sick leave may be credited toward retirement. For accrual rates for Fire Department shift employees, refer to MOU.
Health Insurance:
Excellent medical, dental, vision, and life for employee and dependent, and long-term disability for employees.
Retirement:
Full-time employees are covered by CalPERS (formula is dependent on hire date and member status in CalPERS) and are not covered under the Social Security System.
Administrative Leave:
Management positions are eligible to receive 40 hours of administrative leave per calendar year as authorized by the department director; additional leave up to 40 hours may be granted by the City Manager.
Deferred Compensation Plans:
Available for interested employees.
Union Dues: Job classifications in the unrepresented group do not pay union dues.
Part-Time Retirement Benefit Program:
Part-time, seasonal, and full-time temporary employees either participate in the Social Security System or the PARS Alternate Retirement System depending upon bargaining unit assignment.
SDI:
Unrepresented positions do not participate in SDI.
