About the Position
Description
Under general supervision, prepares promotional and informational materials, graphic designs, and website and social media content; provides customer service and clerical support to the Parks & Recreation Department; performs related duties as assigned.

Prepares promotional and informational materials, including flyers, signs, news releases, web pages, and the departments quarterly recreation guide using a personal computer and a variety of software applications; assembles information from various program coordinators as needed.
Prepares appropriate graphics and photographs, and coordinates publication of materials in a timely manner providing camera ready copy.
Maintains department calendar and coordinates promotional release dates.
Oversees social media team for the Parks & Recreation Department; creates communication portals for the department through surveys, alerts, and timely posting of City/Department information; assists staff in creating web-based content for their divisions.
Provides customer service as needed, which involves answering inquiries and complaints, providing information, and explaining regulations and procedures.
Makes building and ground reservations; quotes fees, collects money, and issues receipts for building reservations or permits issued;
Assists clerical staff with program registration process; coordinates program registrations with various program staff.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum & Desirable Qualifications
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary. A typical way of obtaining the knowledge and abilities would be completion of two years of college with courses in marketing, communications, graphic design, or a related field and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience designing and producing a variety of promotional materials for online and print publication. A bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, graphic design, or a related field and English/Spanish bilingual skills is highly desirable.

Knowledge of: effective marketing and advertising strategies; principles and practices of preparing, publishing, and maintaining content on websites and social media; principles and methods of photograph editing and graphic design; computer applications used to produce a variety of promotional and informational materials; principles and techniques used to establish and maintain strong community and customer relations; fundamentals of writing, layout, and production for mass media communications; correct use of English, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Skills and Ability to: design and produce a variety of promotional and informational materials, including flyers, brochures, signs, news releases, and web pages; operate a personal computer, camera, and other equipment to successfully perform duties; use software and applications for graphic design, word processing, photograph editing, desktop publishing, digital media, and website development; coordinate multiple projects in an efficient and effective manner; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; edit and proofread copy; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work; interpret and explain laws and regulations; interact courteously and tactfully with the public; organize work, set priorities, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision. Proficient bilingual written and verbal skills in English and Spanish highly desirable.

CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLE (DMV) PULL NOTICE SYSTEM
An incumbent appointed to this position is subject to enrollment in the California DMV Pull Notice Program. The Pull Notice program provides information on the incumbent’s driving record and Driver’s License status on a periodic basis to the City of South Gate. An employee assigned a City vehicle must acknowledge receipt and understanding of City Administrative Regulations covering the use of City vehicles.
