About the Opportunity:
The City of Asheville Parks and Recreation Department is excited for you to join its team as a Program Leader. Program Leaders are motivated, and enthusiastic, and have a passion for creating and implementing programs and activities for youth and adults. We’re looking for candidates who can channel the dynamic energy of the Asheville community into the programs and services they provide to meet community needs. Program Leaders will assist in the operations of a recreation facility including developing and leading programs, including activities and special events. Work schedule: 40 hours per week; Schedule varies; this position requires frequent evenings and weekends; as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilites
– Provides oversight of the afterschool and summer camp programs for youth in grades K12 including but not limited to homework assistance, planning, and leading activities, and hosting special events/field trips for program participants
– Leads and directs activities for adult recreation at recreation facilities
– Develops partnerships with outside organizations to enhance programming and meet community needs that align with departmental and organizational strategic and equity goals
– Provides organization, administrative assistance, and direct leadership in providing a diverse collection of recreation programs and events primarily during afternoon, evening, and weekend hours for the convenience and availability of participants
– Develops, implements, and evaluates a variety of programs and events
– Assists with supervision or coaching for seasonal staff and volunteers
– Supervises participants in both indoor and outdoor settings
– Prepares facilities for activities by opening and closing the facility
– Performs administrative duties by answering telephones, scheduling facility activities, providing information to the public on recreation programs, preparing and maintaining records on attendance and participation, collecting and processing application fees and preparing and filing timesheets, reporting work order needs and other forms in RecTrac Last edit – 10/2023 software, Google Suite (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Forms, etc), work order software, etc.
– Maintains cleanliness of the facility, bulletin boards, paintings, and decorations
– Attends regular staff meetings to discuss new programs, ideas, and issues
– Drives City vehicles for activity groups
– Acts in the absence of the supervisor Supplemental Functions: Performs other similar duties as required.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalency, with experience in recreation programming or management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job Licensing & Certification

CPR, First Aid, and AED certification; must be able to obtain within the first 6 months of employment. Certifications are paid for by the employer ?

Valid Driver’s License. Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education will be considered

General knowledge of learned procedures, practices, and routines to work with youth

General understanding of community resources and how to build collaborative relationships with individuals and groups

Understands how to reach out to the community to identify and fill gaps in programming services

Understands and is committed to goals of equity and brings an equity mindset to the organization’s work and workplace

– Ability to plan and lead program activities for youth and adults
– Ability to successfully communicate with participants and the public, while maintaining positive relationships
– Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written form
– Ability to think creatively about work practices, programs, and policies
– Ability to work independently with limited supervision
– Ability to research program documents and narrative materials, and develop reports from information gathering
– Ability to analyze situations to pinpoint problems and assist with solving problems or identifying sources of obstacles
– Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships as required by work assignments
– Ability to analyze and interpret policy and procedural guidelines and to apply this understanding to tasks
– Ability to bring resources together to resolve a problem or provide a solution
– Ability to conduct research on existing, internal policies and procedures
– Ability to read, summarize and/or compare general workplace data and graphics, such as flow charts, maps, tables, etc. Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
