The Recreation Department is currently recruiting a full-time, benefit-eligible, Recreation Supervisor – Aquatics.
Responsible for the overall development, coordination, administration, implementation and management of a comprehensive program of activities and events for the Brooklyn Center Pool. Under the supervision of the Deputy Director of Parks and Recreation.
Examples of Duties
Administration
- Assists in developing goals, policies, priorities and procedures for aquatic community center programs and facilities.
- Keeps supervisor and other city staff promptly informed of developments in the areas of accountability to ensure understanding of the program and prompt resolution of problems encountered.
- Coordinates, supervises, and directs all phases of the programs including overseeing program registration.
- Attends department and other meetings as position requires.
- Works irregular hours as programs dictate.
- Maintains and updates department website/social media as program responsibilities dictate.
Aquatics/Fitness
- Interprets the recreational/program/service needs of youth, teens, adults and senior citizens as assigned.
- Plans, organizes and supervises various community center programs/functions as assigned.
- Plans and implements cooperative and collaborative program efforts with a variety of agencies.
- Assures the adoption and development of programs and services meeting the needs and plans of the City, department and community.
Budget
- Develops/monitors assigned program and facility budgets.
- Assists in the development of the community center and recreation program budget. Purchases equipment and supplies for programs and facility as needed.
Supervision
- Recruits, trains, evaluates, schedules and supervises part-time instructors/recreation personnel as assigned. Plans and develops methods and procedures for implementing recreational and educational programs.
- Obtains and keeps attendance and registration records for programs.
- Conducts surveys and program evaluations to determine public interests and needs. Prepares and reviews reports and records of programs to ensure public interests and needs are being met.
- Training/Safety e Develops/executes a schedule of trainings to assure the staff/facility remains compliant with all applicable certification requirements.
- Keeps accurate records of all licenses, certifications and trainings.
- Ensures consistency, safety and well maintained facilities and equipment adhering to best practices, procedures and policies.
- Monitors programs to ensure quality and safety standards are met.
Public Relations
- Provides information and assistance to the public.
- Handles complaints, investigates problems, and takes appropriate action.
- Promotes programs and facilities.
- Prepares program descriptions/schedules for the recreation guide. e Prepares and distributes program flyers; prepares promotional ads and press releases.
- Handles various administrative duties as assigned by the director.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Communications: Must be customer service oriented and have the ability to actively listen to others for understanding of their needs and situations; ability to speak and write English clearly. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with persons who do not speak English and are from a variety of different cultures. Must be able to assertively control conversations in order to quickly and accurately gather pertinent information and be able to communicate this information professionally and precisely to the proper recipient. Must be able to read and understand correspondence, memoranda, and directives.
Decision Making: Must act in a decisive manner, using good judgment. Must be able to assess problems and situations; able to anticipate needs and evaluate alternatives. Must have knowledge of utilization of appropriate resources and the willingness to initiate use of available resources.

Technical Knowledge: Bachelor’s degree in recreation and park administration or related field. Experience in recreation, facility management or related field. Must have a sound working knowledge of the principles, practices, organization, administration and purpose of recreation programming and municipal facility operation. Must have knowledge of public/business administration principles, practices and techniques. Must have strong organizational skills and the ability to work with diverse groups. Must have knowledge of program and/or facility marketing principles. Must have basic knowledge of telephone etiquette, cash register and/or Point of Sale system use and the use of personal computers; including basic proficiency in Microsoft Office software products. Must have the ability to quickly learn new information and initiate improvements as needed.
Physical Abilities:
Must have the ability to read and discern visual images on a variety of media. Must have the ability to remain seated or standing at the same workstation for up to eight hours at a time with appropriate breaks within that time frame. Ability to perform tasks associated with lifeguarding; including lifting or carrying up to 50 lbs. Work interruptions are frequent.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in recreation, park administration, related field, or significant work experience (5 years) in a recreation setting.
- Two year’s progressively responsible experience in recreation, facility management or related field.
- Supervisory experience in recreation or aquatic setting.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license upon employment.
- CPR/First aid, AED and Blood-borne Pathogens certification or ability to obtain within six months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree, and/or coursework in recreation, park administration or related field.
- Previous experience as a recreation program supervisor, or in a related field directly supervising the work of others.
- Experience working with a registration/facility scheduling software program. (RecTrac preferred)
