Recreation Program Supervisor- Bentonville Community Center

SUMMARY Works with the Recreation Services Manager to successfully maintain, plan, and implement professional recreation services and programs in accordance with the mission and stated goals of the department. This supervisory role requires strong leadership qualities, good communication skills, excellent customer service skills, and strong organizational skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Reporting relationships, work assignments, and work schedules may be subject to change to meet City needs or operational requirements. Attendance at work and the ability to get along with the public, supervisors, and co-workers are essential elements of this position. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Organizes and executes youth and adult programming at the Bentonville Community Center.
  • Organizes and executes all Camp Bentonville programming in the community.
  • Supervises the wellness team responsible for the operation, programming, and administration of all wellness and fitness programming and facilities.
  • Performs supervisory functions by interviewing, selecting, training, evaluating, disciplining, developing, and terminating staff; providing staff with the resources, equipment, tools and knowledge necessary to perform and improve services; and guides employees work efforts in being successful, creating and resourceful within their decision-making responsibilities.
  • Organizes and executes key components of the Run Bentonville Half Marathon.
  • Provides program and event management, customer service, communication and distribute department marketing to the public.
  • Assists in ensuring facilities and surrounding grounds remains a safe, clean environment for the public to utilize for recreational activities.
  • Develops and introduces new recreation programs activities, equipment, and materials to recreation management.
  • Adapts city-sponsored recreation programs to meet needs of citizens, groups, teams, and individuals.
  • Acquires sponsorships, donations and/or other in-kind services as needed for the organization and implementation of recreation programs.
  • Develop and monitor all recreation program budgets; track expenses and revenues generated by the programs; track daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly participation figures; implement corrective measures as needed, and report status on a regular basis; make recommendations for capital improvements and equipment.
  • Works with administrative or other professional personnel such as those engaged in medicine, social work, nursing, psychology, and therapy, to ensure that recreation is well balanced, coordinated, and integrated with special services.
  • Conducts market research and develops short and long-range community recreational goals and objectives.
  • Establishes and maintains contact with recreation service and equipment vendors.
  • Fosters the cooperation and teamwork of city recreation and non-recreation personnel.
  • Develops and maintains relations with other recreation providers in community.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of recreation areas, facilities, and services.
  • Studies local conditions and develops immediate, and long-range plans to meet recreational needs of all age groups.
  • Participates in the development of the recreation budget and directs and monitors the expenditure of department funds and keeping of department records.
  • Participates in professional associations, conferences, workshops, training, recreation.
  • Performs a wide variety of other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position directly supervises two full time staff members and 10-30 (seasonally) part time staff members. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) in Park and Recreation Administration or closely related field and four (4) years related experience and/or training in Parks and Recreation management, including supervisory experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistics and the ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Must also have the ability to perform basic budget management.

REASONING ABILITY Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license, the ability to become a certified First Responder by the American Red Cross and must pass a background security check.
