Position Summary
Supervise, assign, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for scheduling and coordinating recreational services, activities, programs and special events; participate in the selection training, and supervision of recreation personnel; ensure work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures and to perform the more technical and complex administrative tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements
Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in recreation; and

Four (4) years of recreation experience; and

To include one (1) year of supervisory or lead experience.

Certification or membership in the New Mexico Recreation and Parks Association preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver’s License or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of a City Operator’s Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire.
May be required to work weekends, evenings, odd days off.
Preferred Knowledge

  • Operations, services and activities of assigned recreation services program
  • Proper functions, rules and regulations pertaining to various league sports
  • Principles and steps of recreation program planning
  • Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation
  • Modern and complex principles and practices of league sports play
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations
  • Event planning, principles of marketing and program promotion

Preferred Skills & Abilities

  • Supervise, organize, and review the work of lower level staff
  • Select, supervise, train and evaluate staff
  • Organize and direct activities and services relative to assigned program area including either adult or little league sports activities, tennis programs or extracurricular activities
  • Coordinate a variety of sports programs and leagues
  • Ensure proper officiating at sport events
  • Demonstrated skill in recreation program planning, implementation and evaluation
  • Interpret and explain City policies and procedures
  • Prepare clear and concise reports
  • Communicate clearly and concisely
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including City officials and the general public
  • Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
