The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission is an award winning organization with over 5,000 employees that administers over 52,000 acres of stream valley parks, large regional parks, neighborhood parks and park-school recreation areas throughout the Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties.
We are seeking a Recreation Specialist III for our Southern Recreation and Leisure Services Division. This position will take the lead in developing and initiating the recreational programming and outreach for the division. Assists in supporting the regional special events and the two signature events. Implements and evaluates cultural recreational and sporting events within a facility or surrounding community. The Recreation Specialist position is responsible for coordinating activities and providing administrative and programmatic support for the Area Specialist. The employee will assist with the planning and the execution of signature events to ensure timely completion and achievement of agreed upon goals; assist with logistics and preparation of outdoor events; assist with correspondence as needed for events; assist with organizing and managing multiple events/projects; and assist with managing any databases as related to Special Events. Performs other related duties as assigned.
The budgeted salary range for this position is $57,357-$79,471. Salary is commensurate with experience.
Examples of Important Duties
- Creates and implements multimedia marketing strategies, programs and initiatives including but not limited to special events, written materials, virtual programs.
- Analyze statistical data in order to enhance marketing and outreach efforts and strategies and provides regular reports.
- Marketing Division’s programs and special events for distribution to radio, television, newspapers, and public groups, such as flyers, brochures and rack cards, press releases, publications, promo items, ads, TV, radio, web, public service and newsletters.
- Responsible for all community outreach efforts, including volunteer coordination for the division.
- Responsible for managing an outreach team, media production team, videography, photography, and graphic and video design.
- Oversee mobile programs, mobile units, and arts and crafts specialists to provide additional program support services to division programs and events.
- Develop and maintain Southern Recreation and Leisure Services’ divisional newsletter and “Calendar of Events” which include festivals, regional and teen events.
- Builds healthy relationships with government, homeowners associations, civic associations, recreation councils, community and faith-based organizations and non-profit groups.
- Collaborating with other internal divisions to create and support an integrated approach to the development and implementation of communication strategies.
- Coordinates with internal stakeholders and other divisions in Recreation and Leisure Services and Public Affairs and Community Engagement on collaborative efforts, promotion of programs, and other initiatives.
- Responsible for identifying, securing, and managing resources for the division based on community and facility needs.
- Performs administrative duties.
- Performs other related duties as required or as directed by Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation or related field, and four years of related experience, or
2. An equivalent combination of education and experience,
3. Valid Maryland driver’s license or the ability to acquire one.

Basic Life and AD&D Insurance (Employee Pays 20%: Commission Pays 80%)
- Two (2) times base salary; maximum benefit is $200,000 for each
- Automatic coverage with opt-out provision
Supplemental and Spouse/Dependent Life Insurance (Employee Pays 100%)
- Supplemental – 1,2,3,4, or 5 times base salary; maximum benefit is $750,000

Sick Leave Bank (Contribution and Benefit hours prorated for part-time employees)
- Employees have 60 days from date of hire to enroll.
- Employee contributes 8 leave hours each year
- Annually covers up to 688 hours for own serious medical condition, and 480 hours for parental responsibilities (birthadoption or foster care), and 80-160 hours for serious medical condition of an immediate family member
