JOB TITLE: Recreation Specialist Adult and Youth Sports

CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

DEPARTMENT: CRE/Recreation

SUPERVISOR: Recreation Manager, CRE Director & Deputy Director

SALARY: $46,695 to $56,034 annually

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

Operates and supervises the administration and professional work involved in programming, directing, and leading city-wide Adult and Youth athletic programs; directs, leads, and instructs, other recreation events and activities as assigned.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for planning, directing, organizing, and supervising Adult and Youth sports leagues, batting cages, tournaments, individual athletics, and programs for the City of Cheyenne.
  • Develops policies and procedures for assigned activities.
  • Accountable for planning, overseeing, and completion of activity registration; coordinate and schedule leagues, tournaments, and appropriate facilities; as assigned; visit activity sites.
  • Promotes all Adult and Youth activities by assisting the Recreation Specialist in writing press releases, design flyers, appear on radio or television, and ensure all programs are marketed effectively.
  • Aid and input with overall facility maintenance, operation, and control. Maintaining, repairing, and upkeep of three batting cage systems.
  • Provide reports relating to attendance, scheduling, and complaints from participants and evaluations of assigned programs and activities.
  • Assist the Recreation Manager to renew and update contracts for independently contracted user groups.
  • Maintain leagues and tournaments that create revenue to the City, meeting budget and collection of fees.
  • Work directly with the School District and Kiwanis Community House in scheduling facilities for the Adult and Youth Activities. Work cooperatively with the Volleyball Officials and Softball Umpires and ensure the contract stipulations are met.

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Assist in Department or Division wide special events including but not limited to Superday and Wyoming Senior Olympics.
  • Transfer and set up a variety of light to heavy supplies, equipment in support of assigned activities.
  • Maintain, approve, and submit payroll time sheets monthly as assigned; monitor total hours worked.

  • Operations, services, and activities of a city-wide recreation athletic program.
  • Methods and techniques of sound public relations.
  • Operational characteristics of various athletic equipment and tools.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Sports rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Tournament and League Bracketing.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer programs.
  • Provide lead supervision and guidance to assigned staff.
  • Maintain a variety of records and reports.
  • Interpret, explain, and enforce policies and procedures.
  • Operate a variety of recreation equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including City officials and the public.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB

Required:

One year of increasingly responsible recreation athletic administration experience.

Preferred:

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation, physical education or a related field or related experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 30 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

Working Environment:

Mostly office environment; irregular work hours; exposure to inclement weather.
