Hiring Range: $42,650.00 – $49,880.00
Work Days/Hours: Monday – Friday
8:30 am – 5:00 pm (some evenings/nights and weekends)
This position is a part of the Outdoor Recreation and City Lakes unit within Durham Parks and Recreation. The work includes but is not limited to assisting with daily planning and implementation of outdoor recreation programs such as high and low ropes courses, environmental education programs, summer camp programs and assisting with City lakes operations as needed.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Programming for preschool and school-age children, teens, adults, and mature adults, and, when needed,
- Providing assistance with training and leading part-time staff,
- Providing oversight to outdoor recreation programs and activities,
- Assisting with program promotions, preparing reports, entering attendance
- Assisting with registering participants and collecting fees,
- Making purchase recommendations,
- Assisting with budget and payroll processes,
- Ensuring the delivery of quality customer service,
- Ensuring that equipment is maintained to the expected safety standards,
- Interacting with citizens for community input,
- Ensuring the safety of staff, participants, facilities, programs, and services,
- Serving on committees, and partnering with local schools, non-profit organizations, and private entities,
- Must be capable of exercising independent judgment, initiative and creativity, within the realm of established policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
- Associate’s degree in recreation, leisure services, or a related field.
- Two years of recreation services experience in outdoor recreation.
- Experience using recreation software systems.
- NC Class “C” Driver’s License.
- Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certification with Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto Injector Certification within the first six months of employment.
Additional Preferred Skills
- Bachelor’s Degree in outdoor recreation, environmental education, outdoor leadership or related degree.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Experience planning, developing, and implementing outdoor recreation and/or environmental education programs.
- Experience facilitating outdoor recreation or environmental education programs.
- Recognized certification related to the field of outdoor recreation, environmental education, outdoor leadership and/or parks and recreation.
- Willingness to work holidays and overnight trips.
- Comfortable working with anxious or agitated clients/customer.
- Comfortable working in outdoor settings that include being on or over water and in high places.
