Description

The Cosumnes Community Services District is seeking to hire part-time seasonal staff for Teens, Youth Development (Before/After School Care) and Preschool.

Under close supervision, the Recreation Specialist plans, organizes, and directs regular activities for a specific program area, site facility. Functions and responsibilities expected to be performed may vary depending on the area of assignment.

Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all the duties listed. Employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level as required.

  • Assists in the planning, directing and implementing of activities or events within assigned recreation program(s) or facility;
  • Provides group or private instruction using a predetermined curriculum to recreation participants of all age and skill levels;
  • Evaluates participants and teaches according to program outlines, descriptions, and goals;
  • Uses registration software to monitor program registration and contract status or participant payments;
  • Provides courteous and professional service to all program participants, facility users, CSD personnel and the public;
  • Completes and maintains reports and forms as necessary;
  • Provides a safe and clean environment with adequate supervision by implementing guidelines from CSD and Department policies and procedures manuals;
  • Reports any potentially unsafe conditions to the supervisor;
  • Responsible for and may assist with set up and clean up of facility and equipment;
  • Enforces rules and regulations of programs and facilities as mandated by CSD policies;
  • Conducts work tasks safely and in compliance with Department safety standards and the CSD Injury and Illness Prevention Program;
  • Purchases and maintains program/facility supplies and equipment in accordance with policy;
  • Arrives on time and in proper attire/appearance as required by CSD guidelines;
  • Accountable for all program participants during program hours;
  • Monitors behavior of participants;
  • Attends required training programs, conferences, courses and other aspects of professional growth;
  • Communicates with parents, participants and the public; discusses program concerns and issues; addresses behavior or health problems and solutions when appropriate;
  • Develops and implements program/facility surveys;
  • Provides clerical and special project assistance to supervisors, lead staff, and Independent Contracted Instructors as required;
  • Attends and may occasionally plan or conduct staff meetings when agenda topics relate to the assigned program area;
  • Assists in program/facility outreach and marketing;
  • May coordinate with the private security service of the assigned program/facility and reports any security issues during assigned shift;
  • May perform emergency procedures when needed;
  • May be required to work shifts, weekends, and holidays;
  • May perform essential front office duties in the absence of office staff;
  • May perform essential duties in the absence of higher level staff as necessary.

Qualifications

Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered qualifying at the sole discretion of the District. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Education and Training:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, preferred.

Experience:

  • Six (6) months of increasingly responsible work experience or equivalent community/volunteer service in the field to which the position is assigned (or);
  • Actively enrolled in college or other post High School education e.g. trade school.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, First Aid and CPR/AED certification within the first thirty (30) days of employment; Certification must be maintained through employment;
  • Must be 16 years of age or older;
  • Ability to obtain and retain a Work Permit throughout employment, if under the age of 18.

Some positions may require occasional driving. When specified, those positions will include the following requirements:

  • Must possess a valid California class “C” driver’s license, with a clean driving record and maintain it throughout employment;
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

Knowledge of:

  • Current methods, techniques, principles, and procedures used in planning, organizing, implementing, scheduling, coordinating, and evaluating recreation and/or education activities relevant to the assigned program(s) or facilities;
  • Basic principals of child development and activities that support growth;
  • Proficiency in computer database programs, desktop publishing and word processing in currently used programs such as Word, Excel, CLASS, VISIO and PowerPoint;
  • Basic operation of automated office machines including calculator, computer, keyboard, printers and other peripherals, copier, and fax machine;
  • Basic arithmetic including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculation of decimals, ratios, percentages and fractions;
  • Principles of rational systems such as budgeting.

Ability to:

  • Effectively and tactfully communicate both orally and in writing with program participants, facility users, independent contractors, vendors, CSD personnel and the public;
  • Comprehend and prepare reports and forms such as accident, incident, and behavior reports; emergency, registration, and Hold Harmless forms using a prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style;
  • Monitor the work of others including the planning and coordination of basic tasks; provide clear instruction and guidance on a day to day basis;
  • Analyze and use independent judgment in problem solving fairly routine situations such as discussing a potential program/behavior issue with parents or deciding how to implement new activities or programs.
  • Mobility: frequent use of keyboard; frequent sitting at desk or in meetings for long periods of time; occasionally reaching and twisting to reach equipment surrounding desk; occasional walking, standing, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crawling and twisting while performing field work; frequent pushing, pulling or lifting up to fifty (50) pounds for setting up programs, special events and/or sports team equipment;
  • Vision: constant use of overall vision; frequent computer use; occasional color and depth vision;
  • Dexterity: frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing and typing; frequent grasping, holding and reaching; frequent operation of office equipment and recreation related tools such as, but not limited to, baseball equipment, field preparation equipment and hand tools;
  • Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person and on the phone;
  • Emotional/Psychological: frequent decision making and concentration, frequent public and/or coworker contact; occasionally works alone;
  • Driving: ability to use fine and gross motor coordination for driving.

Typical Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an indoor office environment. Occasional work is performed outside in various types of weather. Incumbents may be exposed to noise, moisture, dust, vibrations, heat and cold. Work may require travel to and from off-site locations throughout the District.
