Description

The Environment and Energy Department is seeking a Recycling Center Operator (RCO) to help with screening, unloading, moving, and sorting of solid waste materials for citizens at the Transfer Station.

Location and hours:
This position will be located at the Brooklyn Park Transfer Station, 8100 Jefferson Highway Brooklyn Park, MN 55445, there is no public transportation to this building. Work hours will be Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

In this position, you will:

  • Screen drop-off materials and direct citizens to the appropriate area of the recycling center; assist with unloading vehicle. Inspect incoming organic loads for contamination.
  • Remove unacceptable items from the solid waste and recycling area.
  • Assist with unloading materials from vehicles and help with backing in of trailers.
  • Keep all recyclable materials inside their respective containers; replace full containers with empty containers.
  • Clean the unloading area at the end of each shift; sweep floor with a propane powered floor sweeper.
  • Operate a forklift to move waste materials and recyclables. Operate and perform routine maintenance on cardboard bailer.
  • Stack large electronics items on pallets; place pallets on the shrink-wrap machine and operate shrink-wrap machine to wrap electronic items for shipment.
  • Operate the compactor for recyclables. Ensure only acceptable recyclables are placed in the compactor and notify vender when compactor is full.
  • Perform minor repairs on equipment or report the need for major repairs.

Need to have:

  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver’s permit.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds, with or without accommodation, on a regular basis.

Nice To have:

  • Ability to obtain a forklift permit within six months of employment.
  • Experience:
    • Working in a solid waste transfer station and/or recycling center.
    • Operating heavy equipment such as a front-end loader or a forklift in a professional setting.
    • Operating a skid steer to move cardboard.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time, and to perform a variety of manual tasks involving physical strength and endurance.
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate effectively with customers from diverse backgrounds.
